Video Studio 9 not recognizing MPEG-4 format
Another newbie here, I bought a new fancy Sanyo HD DV (Xacti- VPC-HD-1) camera and it is saving everything in MPEG-4. It seams VS9 only recognizes MPEG-1 & 2. Anyone know how to get VS9 to recognise MPEG-4 (or, worst case to convert from MPEG-4 to MPEG-2)?

You need the Mpeg-4 plug-in available here. Hey, and it's free

Did your camera come with software? You might have to use whatever came with the camera.
I don't know if it will work, but you can try downloading the MPEG-4 plug-in. It says it's for making MPEG-4s and I don't know if it helps you import MPEG-4. (All MPEG formats are really output-playback formats... they are not meant to be de-coded, edited, and re-coded.)
(Oh, Black Lab beat me to it....)
And I don't think Video Studio 9 can import High Definition. I think Video Studio 10 will have HD, and Movie Factory 5 has it. But I have no idea it they can handle your particular format.

Video Studio 9 will capture, edit, and render video files in high definition Mpeg2 HDV 1440x1080 25Mbps if you have installed the HDV plugin. It can also create Divx and Xvid high definition video filesup to 1920x1080p if you download these codecs. I have not found an affordable HD Mpeg4 codec yet.
Note that the Ulead Mpeg4 plugin for VS9 does not (currently) support video frame sizes greater then 720x480 and so is not likely to be useful for your Sanyo, which, I think, has a 1280x720 frame size.
Moreover, the Sanyo records video on memory cards, which I doubt would be readable by VS9. Possibly, a PC would be able to read these cards (as a hard disk) through the USB2. You must have gotten some software bundled with the camera. If I were you I would focus on using that.
Maybe VS version 10 will offer Mpeg4 HD support - wait a few weeks to find out.
