When I try and load video footage shot on my sony dvd handycam I get the message above
Can anyone suggest a solution

Ok, so you are choosing to "Import DVD/VR" and then navigating to the DVD drive.
Then when you select the drive you get the error? OR, are you able to select the drive and see the VIDEO_TS folder and when you select that you get the error?
*As a side note make sure if you have InCD by Nero installed, uninstall it as it tends to take over the DVD reader and not allow access by other programs. Roxio makes a similar product that allows drag to disc, it can be shut down in the system tray.
*Also, make sure you have the latest firmware loaded in the DVD read/Writer.
*Finally (for this one!) the manual of the Sony states that you can transfer an unfinalised +RW contents using the supplied software, that may be so but it is usually more reliable no matter what kind of disc that it is finalised first. Because it is +RW it can always be unfinalised and used again.
