I've never messed-around with DivX, but alot of people seem to have trouble with it. You might look-around for a DivX-to-AVI/DV converter program. Make sure it converts to AVI/DV, not AVI/DivX or AVI/MPEG.

Like all MPEG formats, DivX is not meant to be edited or converted... you're just supposed to watch it. (The concept is similar to a PDF file.)
...or just mpeg to DVD...
I do have experience with bad MPEG-2s. You have a bad or corrupted MPEG. It's hard to say how it got bad. Did you edit the MPEG? (Sometimes the bad MPEG will play-back OK.)

That's probably got nothing to do with it. To the computer, this stuff is just "number crunching". If your computer isn't generating errors in spreadsheets or scrambling your written documents, it shouldn't screw-up the video... it's all just numbers to the computer's brain. This kind of stuff can cause problems with real-time capture or real-time play-back... You can get errors if the CPU is doing something in the background and it can't keep-up. But, what you are talking about is not real-time... If the CPU gets slowed-down it might take a little longer, but it shouldn't crash or get data errors.

Since you already formatted the hard drive and it'ss till happening, chances are it's not a software problem. This is usually a sign of a hardware failure of some kind. It may be difficult to isolate. You will have to try one item at a time. I would first start with your RAM. If you have two modules, remove one of them and see if you can duplicate it. If it comes back, try the other one. Next would be the video card. If this happens shortly after booting up, chances are it's not an overheat problem. But you could download Motherboard monitor for free to check out the temperatures. Hope this helps. Let us know what you find...
