Graduate an image tpo black

If I have an image, how can I start to fade it away, about 50% across the screen, to solid black by the time it reaches the edge?

On the Comman Menu/Fade-out or Ctrl plus H

For an active object or a selection, this command opens the Fade-out dialog box to make colors to disappear gradually.

It is a little tricky to use, but works well. You might try another image as practice before trying the effect on your good image.

It is tricky isn't it! But I think I've got it now, thanks very much!

Best practice, after opening your image, is to duplicate your image (Ctrl+D) before editing. That way, you always have the original to fall back on

What I do is duplicate the layer and work on that.

And if your system crashes while you are at it, you might find your image later with all layers merged.

Will PI do that? That's a bit scary!

I must admit I'm used to Adobe PhotoShop CS, but I can't afford it personally so I use Elements and now PhotoImpact 11 as well, at home. But Photoshop is incredibly stable and never crashed on me.

PI11 hasn't crashed so far, but when it does, I hope it doesn't save a merged copy of my image!

I use layers so I can use the transparency effect, at a later date, to tune the effect of, in the case, a fade to black.
And I always have the original image I'm working on to compare/contrast, just by turning off the adjusted layer.

I immediately gathered that when you talked about layers  PI has objects, same thing, different name. I do know off people who had all objects (layers) merged when they recovered an image after a crash. One of the reasons why I use my approach .

I also save with alternating names after I make major changes. Never lost a minute of work jet to crashes but one never knows :?

Yes, funny that my "Layer manager" manages "Objects" :)

Many thanks for the advice. I shall keep saving my work!
