Very slow text in PI11

Post by TSG »

Is there a way to make text editting any quicker?

I have a reasonable machine with 2GB ram, and it takes about 10 seconds to refresh a page of text, which it seems to do every 10 seconds!

Thanks.

Do you mean a whole page of text, like a letter? As an image file, this would be humungous and could easily cause a slow down, even with 2 gig of RAM.

Yes, there was a page of text on some packaging I was creating. Don't know how many words, maybe 150?

I saved it as a PSD, and loaded it into Photoshop Element where there was no noticable slowing down of the program at all. But in PI11, it became like wading through treacle.

It seems PS Elements is it then, good luck.

I think using a mixture of the two is a good solution. They both have strengths and weaknesses. Overall I prefer PI though.

So do I, at least I don't have a need for such long text entries.

BTW, originally you stated that PI does seem to refresh the page every 10 seconds or so. Do you have the "Auto Save" feature on? I would turn that off and save manually or, at least, increase the time frame between saves.

I have turned off auto-save now. But it's doesn't make any difference to the refresh rate.

When I have the text layer highlighted, it seems to continually refresh, strangely in squares. Imagine filling a chessboard with about 30 lines of text. Each square is refreshed in turn. When it reraches the bottom right, it continues at the top left.

Anyway, I'm probably not using PI in the way it's designed to work, as a (DTP!) :D

As Heinz says if you are using one layer for all of your text, that is probably the problem.

If all of the text is highlighted as a single object, that is probably choking PI. I would suggest you create a lot of layers, and divide the text up into blocks of twenty five lines each and put each block of text on a layer to stop the problem.

I use CS2 and PI11 and PSPX, transferring files between programs as large as 750 megs in text, artwork, and sometimes as many as 100 layers and have not had the problem your having.
