DVD WORKSHOP: Rest In Peace.

http://tinyurl.com/2jld3g
"Many features and functionality of MediaStudio Pro and DVD Workshop are being rolled into the consumer products [DVD MovieFactory and VideoStudio], making them more powerful, but still easy to use," said Tobie Openshaw, a product manager at Corel. According to Openshaw, MediaStudio Pro and DVD Workshop would be discontinued in the near future, but did not give a date.
That appears to be the end of two great products.

I'm so sad to read this.

Jerry,
I know you are a journalist and this is not a knock at you but......
From my experience as a Police Officer who has attended various incidents and then read about them in the newspaper I had to ask myself several times if the incident I had previously attended was the same one being reported in the news.

You cannot believe everything that gets written. Things get twisted turned and buttered up.

I recall whilst at school we heard a story about a General in a war in the days before radio. They relied upon messengers on horseback.
he told the first messenger to pass on a message "Send reinforcements we are going to advance" The first messenger had to pass this onto to a second who would pass it onto a third etc.

At the other end of the line the message now read
"Send four and sixpence we're going to a dance."

Firstly I would be very surprised if anyone in a management position at any profit making company would boldly announce "We are discontinuing this product"
Instead they have two options.
1. Sit on their copyright so that at some time in the future they can resurrect the product in the light of the ever changing circumstances and state of the market.
2. Sell. They can offer the copyright to someone else - perhaps the highest bidder.

If Corel have decided to shelve (not discontinue) the products it is because they are making a loss. They have to take into account development costs against anticipated profit margins.

I for one will be taking that report with a pinch of salt.

Yes and no! You can hardly compare WS2 with Architect Studio. The former has many features which the latter does not. Architect studio is more comparable with Movie Factory.

As for 16:9, there are workarounds which allow you to create menus. A search on this forum will give you some hints.

In any case, although mentioning third-party software is not forbidden on this forum, it is rather bad taste to promote what you believe to be competitive (even if it isn't!)

I'm like ULEAD (UMS from verion 2).
Unfortunately software is not modern. I need modern and certain solutions. It makes nothing Corel (Ulead), there would be visible that.

As a long time user of DVDWS I just cannot understand why there has not been a patch or a new version for Vista. Movie factory is just not good enough.

IMO if there was a linear scale, and DVDWS was a 10 and Movie Factory was a 1, architect would fall most comfortably more as a 7 than near the movie factories rating.

Devil, I do believe that although I understand your point in mentioning other software, perhaps Ulead needs to read some of the things we consider to give them a kick in the butt maybe to do something with DVDWS.

I think its like anything else... some competition is good for em, and if they read what we think about their entry level product vs other companies sub $100 or even sub $50 dollar entries, maybe they will realize their gearbox is stuck in neutral.

It's difficult to scale it as 1 vs. 10 -- because MovieFactory 6+ actually has features not found in DVD WS 2.x

Furthermore, MovieFactory 6+ also has features not found in Architect Studio

However, I also acknowledge that DVDWS2.x and Architect Studio have features not found in MovieFactory 6+ (guess it depends on what features you need to determine what's best for your situation...)

George

I disagree. DVDAS is more like DVDWS, but not as simple to use.

As for WS menu workarounds, there are, but trying playing the disc on a 4:3 tv and see what the menu's look like then!!!

The only real issue I had with DVDAS was that it cut the first 5 seconds of audio from the dvd menu. I could not find a fix, so it was either drop the menu audio (or give it a 5 second delay!) or go back to DVDWS and force a WS menu that doesnt look good on a 4:3 tv. I chose the latter, but if DVDAS fixes this bug then im their next customer! (Unless we see DVDWS3 or the DVDWS2 menu building functionality gets built in to VS)
I only want to build text-based menus with a background - it's not anything complicated!!!!! (Are you listening Corel???

I must be thick, but it seems to me that it's a bit like Adobe giving up on Photoshop thinking that everyone will flock to Elements.
With DVDWS it's not going to happen as any experienced user will not go to MF but will go elsewhere.
Come on Corel have a change of heart & give us DVDWS3 !

Not going to happen. I know why, but, can't say. Just expect a whole new product...

From Corel??
Like other users of DVDWS2 I need it to run on my new computer, which came with Vista (and I am not shelling out for yet another XP license to dual-boot!) and my video camera and TV etc are all now 16:9.
Here's hoping.
