We want WS3! We want WS3!

Post by Devil »

In the "Is WS3 dead?" thread, I mentioned that WS3 development appears to be on a back burner. In one post, I finished with:
Oh! In case I forget to tell you, inundate Ulead with requests for WS3 and get everyone else you know to do so. If they see the demand, they may put it on a front burner! Let's force an orange revolution!
If anyone wants to make their wishes known but doesn't know how, they may post (politely, please!) on this thread or, if they prefer to do it privately, they can send me a PM. I promise to forward messages to the Product Manager concerned. I know he will then put the case before the Management.

No guarantee, of course!

I would dearly love to see a new improved WS3. I'd hate to have to buy a new app and then spend time I should either be earning or enjoying myself learning how to use it.

I'd love to see a Special Edition stripped of all the fancy things (HD, multichannel sound, DRM), but allowing true complete menu and interactivity customization at a "consumer" price.

In fact I'd like to have a better-priced WS2. :-)

As a recent convert from DVDit 5.2 which gradually drove me round the bend, I can see a few areas for improvement:
1. a project workflow diagram (like Encore 2.0). It makes it easier to see what links to where.
2. multi-edit in the edit tab
3. manual button routing
4. user remote configuration eg. disallowing certain actions and controlling what menu appears when the title or menu button is clicked
5. the ability to create button frames in other graphics packages than PhotoImpact.
6. ability to rotate text
7. sequential audio on slideshow ie track 1 followed by track 2 etc. I think someone else suggested a timeline view.
8. ability to align button highlights. If you add highlights to several existing buttons there is no easy way of getting them the same size and same position relative to their parent button.
9. ability to to execute an action after completing a chapter rather than always going on to the next chapter. Encore 2.0 does this with chapter playlists.
10. make the quick preview of menu work for all types of menu - not just for motion menus.
11. In the Finish tab, the preview should allow navigation through play lists. Encore 2.0 has an execute end action button which is quite useful.
12. The addition of global styles for font, shadow etc. It can be a pain having to change the font setting or paste styles each time. That is one good thing DVDit does have.
13. Some out of the box menu transitions.
14. The ability to select the start point for a motion button rather than the chapter beginning every time.
Ok its a long list but it belies the fact that I am very impressed with DWS 2.0 as it is.

Me too! Me too!

But, I'll only upgrade if it has 5.1 surround.

Thank's, Devil.

Or... Do all your custom menu creation and build working folders in DVDWS2 and then use Ifoedit to properly flag for displaying 16:9 menus. Then just use Nero and author to disc. That's it.

I know we can use workrounds for virtually anything we want to do.
The point we are making here is

We Want DVD WS 3

And for it to include all of these things.

Steve,
I was just trying to state that at least one of the 3 desired future enhancements mentioned for DVDWS3 can be done with freeware. Dolby 5.1 and HDV are not that important to me. But since HDV is perceived as the latest and greatest it will probably take precedence over all the new features to be added.

Again wanting and what you will be getting is another story. I definitely agree with ashmont's suggestions. Manual button routing, sequential audio for slideshows, highlight aligning, execute after action, fulltime preview and manual user selection for start of motion buttons. Those would be the top of my list. We can only wait and see what happens. FWIW, DVDWS2 is already a great product.

Another wish relates to the current playlist structure.
Currently everything defaults to a return to the calling menu.
So you "walk out the way you walked in"

In other words.....
Supposing you have "taped" 4 episodes of a TV program and are happy to place all 4 copies onto one DVD. You would probably create something with 4 chapters for each episode so that you can quickly jump to a certain point in that episode.

You would now create a Main menu followed by 4 sub-menus (1 for each episode). When you select a program from one of those sub-menus at the end of the episode control returns to the sub-menu. Personaly I would prefer to go directly back to the main menu.

With WS2 you have to alter those playlist links manualy. I would like an OPTION that allows me to choose a default "After play goto..." so that I can choose to go to the Main Menu rather than the calling menu.

We want WS3.
