How to reduce file size

Post by dprozzo »

I have an .mpg that starts out as 2.85GB. After editing and creating a video file, carrying all the same project settings through, the size has increased to 4.6GB.

The project settings are, quality 100%, 7000, variable, MPEG audio.

I've already clipped the ends of the movie as much as I can.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to best reduce the file size below the 4.4GB limit? Should I reduce the bitrate? I notice that if I choose High Quality the bitrate is 6000. Or should I leave the bitrate and decrease the quality on the compression tab to, say, 90%? Both?

Once again, I'm using VideoStudio 8SE.

I appreciate any suggestions.

As with other posts I have made I like dprozzo have some difficulty with this. I recorded a DVD in SP Mode for just over 2 hrs on my domestic DVD recorder on a 4.7 Gb SL Disc and captured this into VS9. I then removed about 20 mins from this. I then end up however with an mpeg of nearly 7GB which I then have to compress by either reducing bit rate as in your suggested sticky or re-encoding. The former however in particular gives rather poor quality as I am compressing the already compressed. Why if i stick less than 4.7 GB on the timeline can I not get less than 4.7GB out without further compression? By the way as I have also said elsewhere I cannot get Fit and Burn to work at all in VS9 it just crashes. ULead say it is a known bug

Have you turned on smart render?
The function of smart render is that only parts of the original video that have changed get re-encoded. Unre-touched video should "stream copy"

Many thanks - I will try this, what does this mean? ( will look at manual) OK However is this because i am capturing from DVD? See other recent thread.

FWIW, I tried Womble's MPEG Video Wizard. I applied brightness, saturation, and sharpness filters. The resultant MPEG was only marginally larger, but it took 14.5 hours to render! The DVD I made looked great though.
