workshop has the option not to convert compliant file. So in your experiences guys what is better? Import an avi file which will be conveted to an mpeg 2, but you startout with a higher quality video file. Or make a 9mbps mpeg 2. Which DWS hopefully wont convert.

It depends on how good your MPEG encoder is. Ulead's is okay (although I have heard of some complaints on the VBR setting causing jitter). Some people have some high end encoders, so they would use those and pull the mpg into DVDWS2. If happy with Ulead's encoder, then just bring in the AVI. Your choice - no definite answer.

This is a very good encoder: http://www.canopus.us/US/products/proco ... xpress.asp

No special hardware needed for either product. I use Procoder Express, and its very flexible and the mpeg output has been flawless.

Gang,
I noticed in DW2 that if you go to "edit" a Disc Template in the Disc Template Manager, under the "General" tab you can select the MPEG encoder you want. Currently mine says "Ulead MPEG.now Encoder".

Does this mean that you can purchase another encoder such as the Canopus Procoder Express and use it directly here, or do you have to encode it external to Workshop and import the mpg file?

Thanks

i don't know but i do know that i find the mpeg encoder from ulead okay, it is better than another peace of software for the same price.
I've h mediastudio 7 pro and made my movies with it, so i use the mpeg2 encoder from ulead.
So.... if you find it good, use it, if not use another :)
