Burgeoning file size

Post by dprozzo »

I have a DVD that started @ 3.19GB. Using VideoStudio 8SE, I chose Insert Media File to Library | Insert DVD/DVD-VR, etc. I added all 15 of the resulting .mpgs to the timeline and applied the Contrast/Brightness filter to all of them, then went to Share | Create Video file. The final .mpg had increased to a file size of 4.37GB. When I created a DVD, the program warned that I might not have enough room, tho the DVD was created and plays fine.

But, why did the file size increase so much?

BTW, I followed the directions in the sticky.

It probably re-encoded your video using the project settings -- which most likely had either a higher avg video bitrate, a different audio type (like going from DD/mpeg audio to LPCM audio), or a combination of both...

How long is the video, and what is its video properties. Also, what are the settings you used for the new version?

George

I made sure that everything was the same, as in the Recommended Procedures sticky. Bitrate 7000, variable.

Exception: The original .mpgs created from DVD indicate Dolby Digital as the audio type. The project properties don't give Dolby as an option, only MPEG audio and LCPM audio; I chose the former.

The movie is 90 min long, but why would that matter? It was the same length on the 3.19GB DVD.

The program would have re-rendered any mpg that you applied the brightness/contrast filter to so if you applied it to all then all would be re-rendered.
In choosing MPEG audio you may also have used a higher bitrate than the original Dolby bitrate. Dolby is not available to you because VS8 did not natively handle Dolby unless you bought a separate plugin. VS8SE would definitely not have support for dolby as it is a bundled version.
