Unwanted sound when transitioning between clips

I'm a real newbie at this video editing stuff. I have Movie Factory 4 and when I transition between clips, I get a nasty sound where the one clip ends and the next clip begins.

I am using various transition effects, i.e. crossfade or flying cube, etc and all produce this unwanted noise. Is there a way to bring down the audio at the close of a clip?

I'm taking the video from a Sony TRV18 - mini DV.

Try using fade in/out
