by settings I presume you mean:
PAL (24fps)
24 bits 720 x 476 25fps
lower field first
DVD Pal 4:3

I actualy had both the camcorder and the vhs plugged in at the same time this time, to make sure the settings are the same and sure enough as soon as I switched off the camera the program freezes. I also tried the mircrosoft scanner and camera wizard (via control pannel) and it tries to read the picture information but nothing happens. Windows recognises the box and always asks me how I want to use it, but cannot read any picture information. I actually have to unplug the box to stop the programs.
btw I must commend you Ron & Steve for hanging in there to help me with this crazy problem, I really would like to solve it and obviously so do you.

Should this line read PAL (25fps)
Please confirm if you are capturing to AVI or to MPEG
Also please confirm the bit rate settings
eg 8000 variable, 4000 constant etc plus the sound settings.
Could I ask that you complete your system details on your profile page.
I take it you have Windows XP. If so Windows XP installs as part of its operating system "Windows Movie Maker" could you please try to capture from that so that we can see if its possibly an Operating System Error (which will affect both programs) or a Ulead installation error (In which case Movie Maker will capture without any problems.)

Your system is up to spec, no problem there.
Have you plenty of free hard drive space and have you defragmented the drives.

Could you check the Windows error messages for anything containing a red circle with a white cross inside.
Control panel | Administrativce Tools | Computer Management | Event Viewer
then check "Application" and also "System"

The drives a quite empty seeing its a new computer but I will do a defrag anyway.
The event viewer has lots of errors, in the applications its something about a faulty application, faulty module. In system its plug play manager error and Service Control Manager warning only.

If you double click on the error (red circle with white x) a box will pop you giving you a description of the error.
You will also see a link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
It contains hidden information. Click that link and it will take you to the
Microsoft Help Centre with a detailed description of the error and what to do to cure that error.

If you have lots of these then it may be best to firstly
Right click "Application" and clear all events. don't bother saving them
Right click "System" and do the same.

Now deliberately get the computer to recreate the error we are interested in and check those two event items again.

Please update this link with the result of these actions.

ok at the moment I tried 3 programs with the box and even in safe mode (or limited program mode). (vs9, pinnacle 9; windows movie maker)
Message in Application: Warning - Hang - debug is turned off.
Error - Application Hang - there is no information about the specific error.

System: warning 'plugplayManager' system did not respond within 30seconds - close any programs that are running at the same time.

To me is seems as though the plugplaymanager thingo could be one reason but I can't work out which program is conflicting.

Unfortunately not much help I think.....

Another error message after trying some more:
Event Viewer
System 29.3.06

Explanation
The specified service could not continue. This service is configured to report the number of failures and, after a specific number of failures are reported, the Service Control Manager will perform the recovery action configured for the specified service.

User Action
For information that can help you identify possible causes for this error, view the WIN32_EXIT_CODE error that SCM encountered. To view the error, at the command prompt, type
sc query service name

had a look at this query but just showed a lot of applications that were running.

I have the impression that there is something wrong with your Windows installation. This may be something simple like too many running processes, too many programs being run at start up which are all eating up memory and also fighting each other for use of the processor.

It may also be a conflict between two programs trying to share something like a dll file, memory space or specific hard drive location.

Please take a look at this post which contains several hints and tips and is entitled "How to render faster"
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=9611

It may be worth creating a new user profile (as described in the above post) which will prevent any such conflicts.

Another thing you can try is to run the windows System File Checker to double check that your Windows Installation is OK.
Please view this post for a description of the system file checker and how to use it:
