Your camcorder does have a firewire (IEEE1394 / i-link) output socket.
Its probably hiding behind a cover, (I had trouble finding mine when I first bought my camcorder!)

Review of your camcorder here:
http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Sony_DCR_TRV530

For a reason as yet unknown to the veterans of this forum all the camcorder manufacturers seem to include a free USB cable but never a firewire cable.
They are cheap to buy and easy to fit. Here in the UK at PC World they sell a box called a video editing kit for approx £15 (GBP).
Inside the box is a card that fits into a slot on your computers motherboard, the cable and a CD. You don't need the CD.

Don't be tempted to spend the extra buying these as seperate items it will cost more and nothing will be gained.

Once connected to your computer by firewire you can control the camcorder from the computer, play, fast forward, rewind etc.

Any idea about the computer?

Thanks again.
Well I'm not sure about your computer, other then it's a Dell dude..:) :) (sorry had to say it..) But if it is 4-5 yrs old then it didn't come with one. Read Steve's post, and get a firewire kit. The Firewire card will plug into an empty PC card slot. That's all there is to it.

Thanks guys . . . I'm beginning to have hope that I might actually be able to solve this problem!

Let me just reiterate what I understand before I go out and buy this stuff:

1) The first thing I need is a firewire port and a cable to go from my camcorder to the port.

2) After I get this, I will purchase VS9, which will allow me to capture my movies from my camcorder in .avi format. This format can be edited without OOS issues.

3) It seems to me that VS7, which I now have, will not let me capture in .avi format. Is that correct? But VS9 will, right?

4) Once the movie clips are arranged in proper order, VS9 will automatically convert them to MPEG-2 and burn the DVD? Is video quality compromised by capturing in .avi and converting to MPEG?

I hope all of this is correct! Thanks for all of your help, guys.

1. Most certainly.
2. Again Most Certainly
3. I cannot recall the options in VS7, I haven't used it for quite some time
VS9 Will allow you to capture in AVI Format.
4. VS9 will convert your AVI files to DVD compliant MPEG files once you have completed editing. This is the recommended procedure of this forum in order to obtain the highest possible quality video file ready for DVD authoring.

Here is a firewire card for $11.99 from tigherdirect that I have in several of my machines and I've had no problems. It does come with a 6 to 4 cable too.

In the interum, while you are waiting for Video Studio 10, you should download the trial of Movie Factory 5. It works with all my capture devices without any additional plugins, it might work with yours. So far the DVDs I've made are all in sync.

MF5 doesn't have all the editing capabilities of VS but it will do basic editing.

Yes I agree with tyamada, download the 30 day free trial while you are waiting for VS10. That should give you enough time to see if that's what you need. It has some good features in it..

I give up! I bought the Firewire port and cable, and I bought VS9. Now, when I try to burn a disc, it gives me a status bar saying "Converting Video Title" which takes forever to advance, then when it gets to 12% or so, the whole program just shuts off! Maybe I'm not made for this . . .

Again, please post your clip and project properties. Also filling in your system specs would be a help. No one can help if we don't at least have the basics of what you are doing.

Sounds like your using the DV to DVD wizard - first option on the welcome screen.
Instead go to the 3rd option Video Studio Editor then use the capture tab.
During transfer there shouldn't be any converting.

No, sadly, it is the third tab I'm using. The program just hangs and stops responding. Sometimes it has the courtesy to shut itself down, sometimes it just hangs and gives me a "Program Not Responding" message.

Sorry - not the third tab, the third option: Video Studio Editor.

After you have captured the video onto your hard drive are you now saving it as a DVD Compliant MPEG before trying to create the DVD
Share tab - Create video file.
Then File, new to clear the timeline.
Then back to the share tab and "Create Disk."

The problem seems to be with chapter creation. Just for the heck of it, I burned a DVD with no chapters, and it came out just fine. No OOS issues, burned in no time. When I use the same file but add 6 chapters, the program dies. No help from tech support, either. Argh!
