VS8: "Insert video from DVD" - Audio not importing

Post by cacoggins »

Using Videostudio 8, when I insert a video clip from a DVD using file>insert media file to library>insert dvd/dvd-vr, the video imports fine in the desired mpeg format, but the audio is missing.

I've had alot of success capturing video and working out all the audio-video sync problems and burning DVDs in VS8 so I feel pretty comfortable with the program. This is the first time I've tried to insert a clip into a project by importing it directly from a DVD so I'm not sure what settings need to be adjusted to make the audio import along with the video.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Don't use VS and never did what you are trying to do. One thing I know though is this: The audio is embedded in the mepg file, not a separate stream. I would hazzard a guess that the sound is there but you are missing the codec to play it or have an incompatible TV standard for the type of sound.

The DVD I'm trying to import a clip from plays fine on the PC, audio and video are both there, in both the Ulead videoplayer and Windows Media player. So how do I go about checking which codec I need to import properly from a DVD into Ulead's videostudio? I don't have any problems capturing video/audio through external devices, including free-standing DVD players.

When I select the clip to import, the audio of that clip is defined as being Dolby AC-3 Audio, stereo mode, 48.00 kHz, 2 Channels(s). I can't find anything in the various audio capture settings that refer to Dolby or AC-3 anything. Is there a codec required to recognize this, and maybe VS8 doesn't have it, or have access to it?

Also, I'm only talking about importing a 2 minute clip, and not the whole hour of footage on the DVD. When I use the "Trim" feature in the import window, the audio is playing fine there as well. Only after I "finish" the operation is the audio not coming in with the clip.

Hi

Sorry but here's the bad news.

Video Studio 8 does not support Digital Dolby without an additional plugin.

You are best spending your money on upgrading to VS 9.

There is an AC3 filter from soundforge that will allow you to hear the audio, but not recode.

VS8 does not natively support AC-3 (dolby) that is why you hear nothing when you import the clip. There was an AC-3 plugin available some time ago for VS8 that gave ot AC-3 capability but I am not sure that is still available. For a little more money you can upgrade to VS9 which natively supports AC-3 OR wait for VS10 Plus which is soon to be released.
Alternately you can do a search of the board and find a free AC-3 codec that will allow you to import but you will not be able to output to AC-3.

The AC3 plug in for V8 is still available from the UK website here :-

but as the others have said for only a little more V9 would give you Dolby and a lot more.

Well, playing around with it some I discovered you can insert a clip from a dvd that has dolby audio, and export that imported-clip into a greeting card and the sound stays in tact. But still no sound on the imported clip itself while you're in VS8.

Guess I'll upgrade to 9 and hope nothing screws up.
