Reloading VS8 upgrade onto a new computer

Post by meeker »

I reecently bought a new computer and I can't reload the upgrade version of VS8. Originally I had VS5 and I reloaded it but there is nothing in the contents that will let me run the upgrade disk. I have reviewed the posts and there are comments suggesting that all I need is the previous disk in the CD drive to run it but how do I do that?. As I said I reloaded VS5.
The setup and autorun folders open a VS8 page with the girl holding the camcorder, a video tutorial, image, audio and video files, browes CD and exitbut none of those run the set up. I also can't unzip the zipped upgrade folder.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not quite sure if I understand you right. You have a disk for VS 5 plus an upgrade disk for VS 8, right?

What is your OS, Windows? Which version?

Does your PC auto start a CD when it is inserted?

Generally speaking, if you run the installation of VS 8, being an upgrade, the installer will search your system for a qualifying product. Since it cannot locate one (because you have a new system), it's going to ask you for the location of the "setup.exe" file for your qualifying program. Load the install disk for VS5 into your CD drive and point he installer to this CD drive, that should do.

Where did you get these disks from? Are they genuine ULEAD disks or did you make them yourself from downloaded files?

Hi Meeker,

What you can do is uninstall VS 5 and 8. Then launch the setup for VS8 to install it. When it asks for a previous version, place the disc for VS5 in the cd tray. Then click ok. VS8 should then see this and continue to install.

I too have Versions 5 and Version 8 upgrade. What I done was just that, placed my cd for VS5 in the cd tray and VS8 upgrade saw it and installed.

Beat me Heniz, :)
My version 5 disk came with an ATI-AIW card...

Thanks for the quick response fellas.
I have an original disk of VS5 that was packaged eith an ATI video card and a backup disk of VS8 that I purchased when I downloaded the upgrade. It's from Ulead (it has the Ulead logo etc..) but was made by a company called Element5.
I'm running Windows XP media center (brand new) and the backup disk does not autorun. I get the windows prompt of how do you want to run this disk when I start: windows media player, view pictures, view slideshow, view folders, take no action.
I have tried to get the VS8 disk going with VS5 both loaded and just in the CD drive (after I had removed VS5 as suggested). It hasn't prompted me for the location of the setup.exe file or the previous version. When I open the autorun or the set up folders, I get the same screen as I described in the original post. None of the options there start the set up. In the autorun I get an icon for "demo 2" which brings up the girl screen or setup takes you there immediately.
I'm concerned I have a dud disk.
Thanks again for your input and I would have responded sooner but we had a power outage in the middle of my reponse!

Look at your CD in Win Explorer, find the setup.exe and double click it. That should get you started. Not sure about your MediaCenter OS?

My guess is also that Media Center is the culprit. It didn't exist when VS5 or 8 was created. There are several people that are having problems running VS9 on MCE.

1. You say you can't unzip the upgrade folder, why? What happens when you try? If it is a standard zip folder then you should be able to, unless MCE does not have a zip utlitity built in like WinXP. Is your zipped folder a *.zip, or *.rar? If it is a .rar then you can download and install a free trial of WinRar http://www.win-rar.com/. It's a great utility that even alllows unpacking of installers.

2. I've thought about how I advised you in my previous post. That would only work if you had 2 CD drives, sorry  . (I have a DVD/CD and a CD drive, where I can use 2 CD discs to install). I place the disc for the program I want to install in my CD drive and when it is starting to install it will look and see my disc, in this case would be the VS 5 disc, in my DVD/CD drive. If it prompts then I just point it to that drive. This is generally done, by browsing to and locating the Setup.exe file.

3. With VS5 installed on your system, when you attempt to install VS8, does it provide any prompt at all, asking you where a previous version is? If so that's when you browse and direct it to your VS5...

This is odd behaviour, as the only full (not upgrade) version I have is VS5. I haven't had to install that version for a long time. I've just used the disc in the tray. Currently I have installed on my system, VS 8, VS9, VS10(beta), MSP7.0VE, MSP8, DVDMF4, all of which are upgrades...

Well guys, I finally figured it out. I probably should have tried this sooner but at least I got there.
I said previously that I couldn't extract the zipped SV8 folder. When I tried to open it, there was a prompt to extract before running it and then it would deny me permissionto do that. I tried running it without extracting (maybe that's common, to deny the prompt?) and had success. I hit run which then highlighted the SV8 zipped file folder and then I HAD TO DOUBLE CLICK THE FOLDER AGAIN to start the process. It seemed a very strange and non-intrinsic way to get it going. I had SV5 loaded and it recognized it automatically.
I couldn't have done it without your help and I really appreciate your input fellas.

Cheers from Calgary!
