"halo" around selection

Post by 24Peter »

Hi all - my first post though I've been using PI for a couple of years (currently using v. 11). Kind of out of the blue, one day I noticed that there is a "halo" around certain selections that have a soft edge. The color of the halo seems to be tied to the background/foreground colors and is the width of the soft edge. Selections with soft edges in ver. 11 worked fine for many months. Now all of a sudden I'm getting the halo. Any ideas? (Installing the update last week didn't help.)

Not sure what you mean, can you post a screenshot and explain how you selected the object?

Here's a link (don't know if I can embed an image in the post on this forum.)

In this case I used the mask mode to create a selection with a paint brush. Soft edge was at 50%. Once I removed the mask and went to my effect (in this case a levels adjustment) when I return to the main window that weird halo effect is there. A few weeks ago it would have just been the selection marquee.

Well I think I answered my own question: apparently when "preserve base image" is selected, no halo. When it's not, I get the halo. Does that seem right?

Haven't tried it myself but it makes sense. If the base image is preserved, the transparent sections of the soft edge show the underlying image detail and, hence, may not be noticable.
