No audio in SOME of my DVDs. I am using AVI files
I am re-posting this again as I did not get any replies.
I have burned about 6 DVDs and the last two do not have any sounds. The DVD before those two has audio but the one before that one does not!
It seems to be a random problem. I am using AVI files to capture movies from my analog camera and those AVI files HAVE SOUND when I play them on my PC. There is a good sound in preview mode right before I burn DVDs. Sometime there is sound in my DVDs, sometimes there is not. Very frustrating. Please advise. Thanks!

what type of .avi are you capturing to your computer? Are you using an analog-to-dv conversion method (hardware or dv camcorder with pass-thru)
Or some other type of .avi
Can you list all the hardware/software/cables you are using to transfer video to your computer?
Also, are all your DVD Projects using the same settings? LPCM audio, or mpeg audio, or DD audio etc...
regards,
George

I am using firewire to capture analog tapes via my camcorder. It works perfectly. I am using upper field mode option. The avi files are very good. They al have sounds. I burned a number of DVDs which are excellent. All of my DVD projects seem to have the same settings. I beleive I am using LPCM audio or whatever is default in version 8.
The movies have audion in preview mode and most DVDs have audios as well.

If you are capturing dv .avi via your camcorder's pass-thru, then it should be Lower Field First.
Can you update your profile with pertinent info (NTSC or PAL, other hardware info about your computer, etc...).
Two things to check -- are you capturing DV Type-1 or Type-2
Also, if you are creating NTSC DVD's, and somehow used mpeg audio the dvd's that don't work, then your problem might be with the NTSC DVD Player (they don't have to support mpeg audio playback -- though most recent players from the last few years should).
Are you doing any editing with the audio in either VS or the Authoring Application?

Thanks for letting me know about Lower Field First, I was using upper field first.
I am not doing anything with MPG. I am using Dv type 1. I have Dell dimension machine running XP. I have the american setup (NTSC I believe, or whatever is the default one here). Again, MOST OF MY DVDs ARE FINE, just thats SOME do not have audio. I am doing a lot of video editing in my VS but nothing with audio.

When you convert to DVD, you are converting the .avi's to .mpg (either mpeg-2 or mpeg -1 -- mpeg-2 is most common).
The DVD's that do not have audio, if you playback the dvd on your computer, does it have audio during playback on your computer?
What are your project properties when you AUTHOR your dvd

I don't believe I am converting avi to mpg while creating dvds. I am just using default options, whatever they may be. I am certainly not choosing anything that says convert avi to mpg.
My DVDs without audios also do not have sound while I play them back on my PC - I initially thought there was a problem with DVD player so I tried PC.
I do not know my project properties but I will provide them later today
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you just burning some sort of .avi's to a dvd, or are you authoring a standard dvd?
Some dvd players will play divx .avi's, but if you are burning standard-format dvd's, then you will be converting your videos to mpeg.
Explore one of your dvd's -- check if you see a VIDEO_TS folder, and in there if you see alot of .ifo, .bup, .vob etc... files (these are standard dvd's, and are using mpeg video and properly encoded audio).
Regards,
George

Hi chernym
First of all if you capture via firewire to Dv-Avi.
You should select DV as the capture Format, the DV should remain and not revert to Avi option.
If you have selected DV then you have no settings to select other than the DV-Type, choose Type 1. (you have no control over the frame order,) you will almost certainly capture lower field, this is derived from your cameras software. The file size will be about 13Gb per hour.
Right click on one of your captured clips and select properties what are they?
For your project properties File-Project Properties
When you burn a dvd you have to use an Mpeg 2 compatible file, Either you convert the video first then burn or video studio will do it automatically.
It is best that you create the file.
Read the recommended procedure:-
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=27
The process you should follow is basically:-
1 / Capture to Dv-Avi
2 / Edit your project.
3 / Make a new video file (Share Create Video File)(select Pal or Ntsc-Dvd template)(This converts your project to a Dvd Mpeg2 compatible file)
Good for up to one hour of footage.
4 / Use the new file to burn a disc (share-create disc-add video file)
Hope This Helps

Then you are not following the recommended procedure. This is what I am doing. except for the step when I need to create a video file - I skip this step since DVD burning process does it for me.
If it works fine, except for some projects, then it doesn't work fine!It works fine for me - except for some projects.

I have been having the exact same problem!
Here are my steps and what happens:
1. Go from Analog VHS and capture on DV camcorder
2. Capture DV to computer
3. Cut up DV file into clips (which play fine on computer - sound is OK)
4. Create DVD in MovieFactory 4 Disc Creator with appropriate menus.
5. Burn DVD
Result:
Play DVD on computer: Sound is fine - no problems.
Play DVD on DVD player: No sound on video clips, BUT, I get sound for the menu backgrounds. I also have sound on one of the clips that was imported as a wmv file.
However, I noticed that if I turn the sound to maximum on the TV, then there is sound on the clips - it is just very, very low. Essentially, the sound does not disappear - it just seems to have its volume turned way down.
Now here is the wild thing: I happen to have Nero 7 Premium which I used to burn a DVD with the same clip. And the same thing happens! I create a DVD that plays fine on the computer, but the sound disappears on the DVD player.
As a final note, all clips taken originally with my DV camera work just fine.
So - does anyone know what could be causing this? The root cause only seems to be that the original files were from an analog video source before being captured.

Here is how I solved the problem: I do not burn to disk directly but rather I create an image file and Video_TS folder. I then check the resulting DVD by using DVD shrink (you can use any other software, I just happen to like DVD shrink) to make sure there is sound. I then burn image file using Nero onto a DVD disk.
I am not sure it has to be done this way and creation of video image file take up a lot of space but it seems to work for me!
Here is the crucial part: I noticed that sometimes there is no sound when previewing the movie (right before creating the DVD). If that happens I exit Video Stuido and then open the project file. The audio is usually OK the second time. I then create the files.
I am sure there are better. more efficient ways but this works for me!
