You need to connect your camcorder by way of an IEEE1394 cable known as firewire / i-Link.
The USB cable that was supplied with your camcorder is useless and the veterans of this forum have never understood why the camcorder manufacturers even bother to supply that cable.

Very cheap and easy to fit buy something called a "Video Editing Kit"
(At PC World in the UK approx £15 (GBP))
The kit contains an IEEE1394 card that fits your motherboard plus the cable that connects you camcorder to it. You will also find a CD but you don't need it and can put it away somewhere.

Once connected by firewire you will find that the computer will now control your camcorder, play, fast forward, rewind etc.

Firstly check to see if the computer knows you have a camcorder.
XP has Windows Movie Maker
"C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe"
See if this detects your camcorder.

If yes, turn off the camcorder. Open VideoStudio. Go to the capture tab.
Turn ON the camcorder. You should get a message to the effect a new device has been detected do you want to use it?

If no. Could be a problem with the firewire lead.
Do you have access to another computer that you could connect the camcorder to, if so this will help eliminate the lead (or even the camcorder itself) as a cause.

We will have to tackle this one a step at a time.

Windows XP doesnt need a driver for firewire its built into the system.
Sounds like a faulty lead, or if you have access to another computer you could plug it into that one to try and see it gets detected.
This is going to be a process of elimination.

Hi Sivik,

What you stated is certainly as sjj pointed out, appearing to be a faulty lead. Do you have a firewire card, or is the firewire port built in? Since you obviously had a problem where you needed to do a complete re-install (and I'm taking that as even re-install your operating system), then maybe your firewire card hasn't been installed properly. To remedy that, you would need to either go to Control Panel>Add Hardware, and use the wizard to see if it recognizes your firewire card, or simply shutdown your machine. Then open the case (make sure the power cord is unplugged), then remove the firewire card. Close it up, plug it in, restart. When it's fully booted, then shut it down again. This time replace the firewire card. Then reboot. Windows should now see that there is new hardware, and install the needed drivers. However don't attempt that if you are uncomfortable with installing or removing components, and that you know which card is your firewire card (just a little disclaimer there...:) )

The reason for the above, is that if it was a problem with VS, then when you tried it with Movie Maker, there should not have been a problem. So that narrows it down to the Firewire Cable, your Operating System, or even your camera...
