Audio sync trouble when using dolby audio

Post by slgorin »

I have mpeg files encoded with ac3 audio that play fine in media player before authoring. After authoring, the sync is off midway through the movies. Worse towards the later tracks. These files were ripped with dvd shrink and have 9800 kbps video and 448 kbs audio ac3.

I have other files that are cvd (352 x 480), non dolby that are authored fine unless I reencode that audio to dolby 2 channel. Those files have audio sync trouble too. They have video bitrate of ~2500kbps.

The same files that were ripped with dvd shrink author in sync when using tmpcenc dvd author. But I am used to DVDWS!

The cvd files were captured with Hauppauge pvr 250 capture card. The ripped files were quickstream fixed with video redo.

I am using dolby digital audio more and more lately and would like to have the audio in sync. I did try a fresh load install of OS and DvdWS v2

I do get a warning on both authoring programs about the bit rate being too high and wonder if that is the problem, but tmpcgen author does not seem to be bothered when authored. I did start to re-encode files to a template of similar properties, but did not want to wait four plus hours for the four files to be reencoded. Any Ideas?????

Certainly, 9800 kbit/s video, plus 448 kbit/s audio exceeds the DVD standard. I recommend you try 6000 kbit/s video and 192 audio. You should also be aware that DVDs with high bit rates will not play in many players.

In my experience, this problem was caused by corrupted MPEG files. (And, the corruption was caused by simply editing the MPEG without using a special purpose MPEG editor.)

I call it "sneaky corruption" because the problems don't show-up 'till you re-multiplex or re-code. The corruption probably gets "fixed" but the result is an out-of-sync file. :(

But I assume that you did NOT edit the file, so I don't know where the corruption came from. :?

A couple of programs that include tools to fix the embedded MPEG time-stamps are: VideoReDo ($50) and Womble ($50 - $140). believe these programs work best on the file with the "sneaky corruption" before the sync problems actually show-up. Both of these offer 30-day free trials.

RE: out of sync with dolby audio

Post by slgorin »

I am using video redo! and the audio sync happens whenever a dolby audio stream is used in my project. whether my video has one already or one is converted to one. I have used the quickstream fix from video redo.

The same project is in sync when using tmpcenc author, so it must be doing something better than DVDWS, but I dont have the flexibility I do with DVDWS.

And as far as the files being greater than 9800, those files were ripped with dvd shrink which must not be updating the headers. Files that are about 1 GB, 45 min of video, can not be 9800 KBPS!
