No audio in SOME of my DVDs. I am using AVI files

Post by chernym »

I have burned about 6 DVDs and the last two do not have any sounds. The DVD before those two has audio but the one before that one does not!
It seems to be a random problem. I am using AVI files to capture movies from my analog camera and those AVI files HAVE SOUNDS when I play them on my PC. Please advise.

I am using version 8.

Version 8 does not support Dolby so I would suspect that some of the DVD's had dolby sound and others had a different format.

The cost of a Dolby Plug in is almost the same as purchasing an upgrade to Version 9. However version 10 is just around the corner and so it may be worth waiting a short time longer.

If you have PhotoImpact you can try your hand at the latest Ulead competition and try and win one of the 5 copies being offered as prizes.

Steve -- from what he says, it seems he himself is first capturing analogue tapes to computer using VS8, all captures having sound. Then he himself produces the DVDs, again, I assume, using VS8 -- but some don't have audio. I therefore don't think it is a Dolby question. Mind you, he doesn't give us enough information to draw any other conclusions.

Chernym -- can you please right click on your captured files in the library pane of VS8 and copy down the properties and post them here, please. Also, how exactly did you capture: what sort of capture device -- an analogue capture card or your digital video camera as pass through? How was it connected to your computer? Can you also confirm that you used exactly the same properties for all the captures, then did all your editing in AVI mode, and then selected Share > Create Video File > DVD. If you did this, what audio format did you choose -- LPCM, mpeg audio or Dolby AC-3? And once you had produced this file, did you select Share > Create Disc > DVD? Or did you go straight from the project in the timeline to the burning stage? Please also tell us the specifications of your computer and your operating system.

Ken
Oops, thanks. I was trying to answer a few problems whilst at work and read the first part and some jobs must have come in before reading about the source files.

It appears I may have been suffering from a similar problem. Please bear with me as I am new to using Video Studio 8 or any similar software. I am using a DVD with video footage, attempting to edit this footage and create effects using UVS8 and then burning the finished article on to a DVD. I am getting no audio either when trying to capture footage from the original DVD or after burning the edited footage to DVD. The properties of my capture are as follows:

File Format - PAL DVD
File Size - 84,978KB
Duration 137.760 seconds
Video Type - MPEG-2 Video, Upper Field First
Total Frames - 3,444 Frame(s)
Attributes - 24 Bits, 704x576, 4:3
Frame Rate - 25.000 Frames/Sec
Data Rate - Variable bit rate (Max. 9396 kbps)
Audio Type - Dolby Digital Audio
Total Samples - 6,612,480 Samples
Attributes - 48000 Hz
Layer - None
Bit rate - 256 kbps

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Trotsky -- you definitely are suffering from the fact that VS8 cannot handle Dolby audio without a plug-in. The Ulead Dolby plug-in costs almost as much as the upgrade to VS9, and the latter is a much better program which can handle Dolby natively. Be aware, though, that VS10 is on the horizon, and if you decide to upgrade, you might want to wait till that appears.

You can, in the meantime, try a free Dolby AC-3 filter which should at least allow you to download Dolby audio, though you will not be able to recode and output to Dolby on your final DVD. It can be found here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=186
