I have the autosave feature set to save every 5 minutes
I had PI 8.0 crash before I had saved a project.
How do you take advantage of the autosave feature to recover your lost work?

Check your folder where the "Autosave" is saving to. You'll find this in your preferences. If you haven't saved your work once with a name of your chosing, I don't know if you can actually access the file either.
Personally, I have never restored an auto saved file because I do not use this feature. More likely than not, this "feature" may be to blame for your crash.
I would turn it off and get used to frequently saving a copy of my work manually.
