Audio out of sync

Post by Jamz58 »

MF 3.0 SE

I have captured some video via WinTV (MF3 came with it). When I edit the video to clean up the ends the audio gets out of sync. It starts out fine but then the further into the video you get the worse it gets. By the end they are about 5 seconds out of sync.

There is also an issue with MF properly predicting the edited length. It says it will fit 4.6GB but when I burn it to the harddrive it comes up at 5.5GB.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

I need some properly working software to edit captured video. I wonder if MF is really the solution. Based on this forum it looks like MF4 is no better than MF3. I wonder if MF5 would be a wise investment. As I am a newbie to this stuff any insight is appreciated.

IT'S THE EDITING...

MPEGs are NOT meant to be edited, and so far, none of the Ulead products are very good at it.
Perhaps MF5 will be better... You can download the trial version of MF5 when it becomes available. 'Till then, use the special-purpose MPEG editor that came with your capture card (WinTV MPEG editor?)

Or, if you want to do any "real" editing (more than just cutting & splicing), Womble makes a nice full-featured MPEG editor ($100 - $140). Womble will NOT introduce sync errors!

However, most "real" editing requires that the MPEG be decoded and re-coded. No matter what editor you use, you can't escape the quality loss from the 2nd encode. The quality loss isn't always real bad, but you know it's there... :(

IMHO, with your set-up, you should be using Movie Factory only for authoring & burning DVDs. I assume that Ulead gives-away the SE versions of their software to hardware manufacturers without really making sure it works with the particular hardware! ...You'd think the hardware manufacturers would try it out!
It says it will fit 4.6GB but when I burn it to the harddrive it comes up at 5.5GB.
A Bitrate Calculator might help you pick the correct bitrate. My rule-of-thumb is 6000 kbps with AC3 audio for 1.5 hours of good quality video. (...You don't have AC3 with MF3, so that means a lower bitrate or shorter playing time.)

You might want to try this patch, DVD MovieFactory 3.0 Update Pack (Build ID: 300P01, Release Date: 2004/06/03)
http://www.ulead.com/tech/dmf/dmf_ftp_dmf3.htm

After that patch you should install the CD/DVD burning patch.

Thanks

I tried the patches. So I gather this software just doesn't work as expected. I tried MF4 trial version and I have all new problems (won't burn a disk and files in harddrive won't shrink).

I am seeking good software that is hassle free. I may try MF5 but I will also be looking elsewhere. I want a good editor.

I've had a lot of technical support issues with various companies and have learned to just seek good software and minimal support (patches, etc). I want software that works for me, I'm sick of working for my software.

Thanks for all of your help and guidance. It is greatly appreciated. (I've also learned that many users are much more helpful than tech support)

Best Regards,
Jim

The matter of audio/video synch is now such a frequently asked question that I have placed links to existing posts in the Tutorials Section.

No simple solution that I see there. Just more frustrated people.

I haven't found a solution yet, but I do know what's not the solution. Movie Factory.
I don't know how they sell this stuff because I can't get verisions 3, 4 or 5 to work properly when editing a mpg file.
I'll take a look at Womble, Nero 7, or some others. Later Ulead.

Try VideoReDo for editing. Free trial available.
http://www.videoredo.com/Download.htm

I use WinTV2K to capture with a PVR250, edit with VideoReDo and author with DMF. No sync problems. I capture in DVD compliant format MPEG2 PS so it doesn't have to be converted. 1/2D1, 352X480, 2.0 Mbps

VideoReDo doesn't reencode your video except for a few frames around cut points

When authoring in DMF, don't edit. Make sure "Do Not Convert Compliant" is checked and "Treat audio as non-compliant" is not checked. Also make sure "Normalize Audio" is not checked.
