Proxy Help / Question

Post by krwzmann »

Hi all. Posted a long message but when I hit submit, it got lost. Doh!
Well heres a summary of my MSP8 HD proxy question

1)Proxy froze on video file 5 of 6. It's been stuck on #5 for 5 hours now. It completed 1 - 4 in about 1 hour each. What's going on?

2)For files already proxied, when I remove the file from the timeline and then reinsert the same file, MSP8 tries to proxy the file again! The proxy file was proxy1 but msp8 tries to make a proxy1_001 file. What's going on? In the past the smart proxy always links the video to the same proxy. I hope I don't have to keep letting it proxy each time i insert and remove the same video from the timeline. That would take forever!

3) Can you proxy to a different hard drive instead of the C: ? I tried to proxy to my J and K drive but the proxy won't even get past 0%?? Is the C drive temp (Default directory) the best place to proxy the files? I wanted a different directory because my temp directory has other files in there and it would be more organized I thought to proxy to a different folder or even hard drive.

specs: msp8 dual core 3.0 ghz 1gig Ram and 3 SATA 300gb 7200 rpm hard drives/ Recorded in 1080i and captured in HD. Thanks in Advance!

Have you created a project file for your clips?

I just changed my proxy drive from D:\temp to E:\Proxy, both work fine.

I do have problems every once and a while on a new clip, proxy will not start, sometimes it will look like it's working but it isn't, other times it will not even start. I have get out of MSP8 and restart it and reload the clip, after that all is fine.

Yea that's what happens with me sometimes too... it looks like it's making a proxy file but it's not doing anything. Or sometimes i'll put in a new video file and it won't even create the proxy when it usually would.

But yea, perhaps I need to save the project file first and then put in the video files on the timeline to start the proxy. What I did this with this project was put all of the clips onto the timeline and then just let it go ahead and proxy. The reason I did not save the project file first was because there was nothing to save before I put the clips in. I'll just go ahead and put in a small text clip and then save and go from there.

Thinking about, I have a feeling too that maybe the auto-save feature might have been part of the cause of the freezing proxy. Maybe (just speculation) when auto save tried to save, there was no file name for the project yet and maybe the program did not like that?

Tyamada...once you proxy in one project, are you able to open up another project and work with the same video files without having to proxy again? Does the 'Smart' in smart proxy somehow recognize that the video file(s) was proxied in another project already and link to it? Thanks!!

When I load the HD file that has already been proxied, some how it links back to the proxy file.

I suppose if you load several proxied clips into a project you shouldn't have to reproxy them.

I don't think I've had and problems with the auto save feature, it has save all my work when MSP8 crashed.

Ah man I don't know what's going on :?

Just tried it again and whenever I reinsert into the timeline a file that has already been proxied, MSP8 tries to Proxy it again and names it the same filename but with an 001 added to the name. Help?

Worked great for my last project. Now this i'm getting a headache. doh!

Tyamada...when you reload clips on your timeline that have already been timelined...are you reinserting the proxy files or the original HD files? In the past i've just been re-inserting the original hd files and they would link to the proxied files. That does not seem to work anymore though. Proxy...what's going on?

I don't have any problems when I load the proxy file or the actual HD file, my MSP8 knows that it has been proxied.

Have you installed the latest Hotfix?

If the Hotfix doesn't fix your problem I suggest you try to re-install MSP8.

Ah well I guess I'll try and reinstall after I finish this current project. I don't want to risk re-installing only to lose all of my work. If it's for sure that all project files / linked files from different hard drives remain the same then i'll give it a shot. Ah perhaps i'll just play it safe and wait till after the project is done.

I've resorted to skipping the whole proxy process and i'm working on editing the HD footage directly. It's slower of course but it's working.
