Need a basic, cheap DVD to .avi program

Post by stonesfan »

Hi

I can rip from DVD to Mpg with Videostudio9, but I would like to rip to .avi, as I want the product to remain as high quality as possibly during processing.

What is the best priced DVD to .avi ripper?

thanks

Well since the video on your DVD is only mpeg how will converting it to .avi improve it ?? If the information isn't there in the original format then there is nothing to put into the higher spec format.

I want to edit it though.

I guess capture as a .mpg and then convert to an .avi in videostudio9 for loss less editing?

I can see what you are getting at but the file is already an MPEG.
Converting it to AVI will later require that it be converted back to MPEG again later and so you will still get the loss of quality at that point.

If you start getting out of synch problems problems when editing with Ulead you may have to consider a purpose built MPEG editor such as Womble http://www.womble.com/

Although the latest version of Womble now includes DVD authoring it is very limited and so after editing with it, I would then render a DVD compliant file, then revert to Ulead to author the DVD.

If you view the following post you will see someone else has already tried the convert MPEG to AVI first route

You can just use windows movie maker; and in the export setting- export to DV-AVI format. The encoding quality is good and the program is free.
