i assume you'd just want to create a title with all the names, put a rolling/crawling effect on it (never used MSP's actual title editory, i always use CG), but then just have it with a black color clip as background, maybe... i think ?

Which Version

Which version of MSP are you using?

In 6.5 and under, there is a rolling text function.

I'm not sure about 7.x

Did you ever find out how to create rolling screen credits with a black background?

NB. There is a tutorial on Ulead website about how to create rolloing titles. But I cannot figure out how to get white text on black background with MSP7 Title editor.

MSP7 has dozens of different ready-made templates for fancy titles, but none for the traditinal rolling screen credits!! One has to create it onesellf by adapting already existing templates. Absurd.

Start from scratch, open up the title clip dialog box. Put it on a overlay track, right click>edit title and make sure the "opaque text" box is selected and the text is white, insert your text. Your text will show up over whatever is in the main VA VB tracks.

The thing to remeber is when you change the text color ir doesn't change the color of text you have already inserted, you need to highlight it first.

The key is the overlay track

As thecoalman said, I think the key is putting it on an "Overlay" track (V1, V2, etc...), and not on the Va or Vb track.

This is weird...

I have been using MSP7 for some time now, and this is super annoying.

I mean, something that I would've thought of as super standard is some "trick"?!!
And whatever the trick is, I don't get it.

So, I use Premiere Pro for that.
Which is a total waste!
I mean, I haven't got Premiere here, so I buzz off to a friends place who does. Just to get this rolling text stuff in place! Stoopid!

But, this is about the only annoying part of MSP7 I can find. Generally I think it's great for close to everything else... so far...

So, you may ask why I don't dump MSP7 and get Premiere?
Well, MSP7 seems to click generally well with the way I am thinking, and Premiere just seems like a different language. Apart from this rolling text feature that is...

It is easy.

Open the titler, check opaque text and make it white.
Check opaque background and make it black
Type your text, formatted as you want
Click the Animation tab
Go into Type Fly
Pull down the scroll tab on the right and choose Fly11
If you want tighter control over the effect, use the Customize button and save your template with the Add button.

That having been said, this is fine for short credits, but the rendering time for long credits is painful.

Personally, I prefer another method:
In PhotoImpact, I make a page with the credits, 720 pixels wide. I import it in MSP as a BMP file and I use 2-D Moving Path to scroll it (more effects possible using TGA format with alpha keying, but not usually necessary). This renders faster.

In MSP 8, the titler is much easier to use.
