We record onto stand-alone DVD recorders (Sony VRD-VC20) using DVD+RW disks. The DVD's play in computers and stand alone DVD players. We take these disk and change the menus (background, titles) in Ulead DVD MovieMaker 3. This has worked well but occasionally we go thru the process, everything seems to work fine and we go to test the DVD after the menu change and nothing will see or read it. Windows says the disk is unformatted or corrupted, the DVD players say it is a blank disk or give disk error. So far we have had back-ups but this could be a real problem. Why would it do this? What can be done to correct the problem.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve,
If you have "Nero InCD" or Roxio "Drag to Disk" or Sonic "DLA" software
installed on the computer they will corrupt the DVD.
Everything works well until you eject the DVD from the Dvd_writer and
then the software that's running in the background takes control, updates
the dvd+rw and corrupts it because it thinks it's a DATA DVD.
When I had Nero "InCD" installed everything worked fine until I hit the
eject button on the DVD writer or used software to eject the disk.
The "Packet Writing Software" monitors the dvd so when it's ejected the program updates the contents so the dvd is readable in any other computer.
That "Packet Writing" software is for DATA ONLY Dvd's. No video.
So, on my system when "Nero InCD" was installed if I recorded on my sony unit and edited the dvd in the computer.
When I hit the eject button after previewing the dvd on the computer using a software player or whatever the program takes control of the dvd
and writes a new allocation table AND the format is different. This corrupts the dvd.
If you do have this software installed on the computer then if you record
something on the Sony unit using a DVD+RW disk. Simply put that dvd
in the computer and "PLAY" it using any software player on the computer.
Don't run any video editing programs. Simply play the dvd to view it
on the computer.
Then hit the "Eject" button and see if any program accesses the dvd and
starts writing to it. If that's the case when you put the dvd back into the
recorder it's a no go. It's corrupted and must be re-formatted.
If the recorder says it can't reformat the dvd then put the dvd back into
the computer and perform a "Full Erase" (not quick erase). This will
restore the dvd to a state that the Sony unit can re-format it for video again.
On my system once I hit the eject button it's all over and the disk is lost.
I can't stop the process.
I don't use "InCD" anymore (using data-add2) but you can either un-install the program or temporary disable it by right clicking on the
icon in the clock area and selecting exit.
The confusing problem is that the dvd is formatted for video in the dvd recorder similar to the method used for packet writing data to a dvd.
When you put the dvd recorded in the Sony Dvd_Recorder into the computer the computer program that's running in the background
thinks it's a data disk and monitors/updates it.
If this is the case you will have to un-install the packet writing software or disable it before using those dvd+rw video dvd's in the computer.
You should be able to go to the "Properties" of the dvd writer in the computer and under one of the TABS there should be a screen that
gives you choices to disable or enable the software/packet writing on
that dvd burner.
If all else fails, "Put it in the Microwave".
Hope this helps,
MD

Corrupt DVD after menu change
Thanks for the reply. It does provide some insight as to what might be happening. I do have Nero Burning ROM, and Nero Express. Neither program is running in the background. I can't tell that either program is accessing the disk after Ulead finishes changing the menus. It still does not account for why it only occurs to 1 out of 15 disks that we are changing the menus on. It does make sense that something is seeing this as a data disk instead of video and changing the fat tables after Ulead finishes. Is it possible that Ulead is making that mistake?
