DVD copying in VS9?

Post by John O. »

I am using VS7 SE (came with my capture card). I have also downloaded Movie Factory 4 trial version, looking for a simpler to use program, but it falls short in a couple of areas.

Question: MF4 has a very convenient and quick direct DVD copying feature, which is great for making copies for family members, but my VS7 does not. Does the retail version of VS9 provide this feature?

See my post to your other query, ditto.

Usually the easiest way to copy a DVD is to use whatever software (Roxio, Nero, Hotburn, Etc.) came with your DVD burner and just do a 'Disc Copy' - you don't need any Video editors or DVD authoring programme to do that.

You are right, Brian, but my burner is a Sony OEM that came with the computer, and the software provided was pitiful - it only addresses CDs (all aspects) and how to create data DVDs. Nothing about video.

By the way, I saw your website - great stuff! You have invested a lot of time and effort to help us newbies - thanks!

Basically when you are copying a DVD even if it is video you are only transferring data in the form of folders and files from one disc to another, copy disc normally works for video as well as 'static' data

If you're still stuck for a program that can copy your DVD, DVD Decrypter is a handy freeware utility that will be able to write your disk to an iso file, from which you can burn further copies. I like it for its simplicity and compact nature.

Generally speaking the easiest approach, if you know you are going to want multiple copies for friends and family, is to share your project to an iso file in the first place, from which you can burn copies as needed. Perhaps that feature is disabled on VS7 SE.

You should try the VS9 trial, however - I think you'll be impressed by the improvements compared with VS7.

Thanks for the advice, 2dogs, but in the meantime I tried to update the pitiful OEM program (NTI) that came with my computer and Sony burner, and - lo and behold - the update provided the direct DVD copying feature I was looking for, so I am all set now and at no additional cost!.

I am considering buying VS9, now that I am becoming friendlier with my VS7, but will follow your advice and test the trial version first.
