First, I am very happy about MSP8's new design and features that streamline my video editing process. Ulead is definitely in the right direction in improving MSP.
However, I experenced several Smart Composer issues that will cause MSP8 to crash/close. The first sign of failure comes when, inside the Smart Composer, the preview plays with sound only and the preview screen freezed. I can still insert the clip into my timeline as long as I do not preview the clip inside the Smart Composer. If I did preview it, either immediately or after some time, the MSP8 will crash and error message says certain memory address cannot be written.
I found the only way to recover is to un-install and re-install MSP8.
My system spec is:
AMD x2 4400
Asus A8N-SLI
4GB DDR memory
Asus 6600 PCI-e Video Card
Windows XP Pro / SP2

If I understand correctly you can insert a smart composition onto the timeline, but if you go into the smart composition composer and attempt to make changes it crashes.
If that is the case, the workround is to insert the smart composition onto the timeline as it originaly is. Now double click it and it will open up in a new timeline. Many of the video/audio tracks you see are also from other nested timelines so double click each one and some (or even all) may open up yet another timeline.
You can now right click a video (or audio) and select "replace with" then navigate to your own videos and audio material.
