No MF5 is not an upgraded program of MF4 Disc Creator. You can check out the comparisons here:

I posted earlier that I was happy with MF5. Unfortunately my happiness is draining away. All I do is capture via firewire from a Canon movie camera AV/DV converter. I also posted previously about MF5 chopping up AVI captures into 4GB segments - this has turned out to be a real problem for me. Along with the 4GB segments, which you have to re-join to get a piece of video that you can add chapters to, MF5 still retains chapter information based on the original 4GB chunks. OK, I can delete these automatic chapter points and insert my own but when you have finished authoring the video, try the preview option. All goes well until I try to go to a previous chapter in the preview, MF5 hangs and I lose all my work. I am sure it is something to do with the 4GB chunks and the inbuilt chapters that I have deleted. I now use MF4 to capture and MF5 to author - this seems to work OK.

Firstly you havent completed your system specifications on your profile page.
Next - If you suffering from a 4GB chunk limittion this will no doubt be due to the fact you have FAT32 hard drives.
They need to be converted to NTFS as shown here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodte ... rtfat.mspx
You are using Windows XP or Windows 2000 aren't you?
Although headed VideoStudio you will find the contents of this tutorial useful

Steve,
He's correct, MF5 splits the DV files into 4 gig chunks. NTFS doesn't matter.
I am running the OS on Fat32 though but all configs and working folders point to NTFS partitions.
MF4 doesn't split them on the same OS & drive setups.
Hey, makes it easy to backup the 3 dv files to dvd right?
That's actually not a problem for me because I join them and then export to 1 mpeg2 file anyway.
Also on my version of MF5 I don't have a choice of dv type 1 or dv type 2.
The advanced screen doesn't have the options avaiable.
Also, if capturing analog to mpeg2 via my ATI TV Wonder Pro I need to make a custom template first from the timeline screen and apply that as the capturing properties in the capturing module. The ability to change the capture properties of the mpeg2 file isn't available in the capturing module. Only the templates.
Also, if using Variable bit rate it doesn't matter what I select as the video-bit-rate. Any video-bit-rate set to variable above 4200kbs ends up 4200kbs. I now use Constant to encode with and the video is very nice.
The video is better than the dvd recorder using dv input into the dv recorder.
MF5 does seem to have better fault protection in comparision to previous versions. If there is a hang I can terminate the MF5 thread and restart again. No hangs forcing a reboot.
I don't know about the different version though. I CAN create ISO files in the HD-DVD mode. Some others cannot.

Thanks Drummer and thanks Steve for the effort of your input. But, no, I do not have the box ticked for 'split video'. I am an XP certified professional and know there is nothing wrong with my setup, yet I still get 4GB chunks when capturing AVI under MF5, but not under MF4. It will remain a mystery!!! Thanks Guys.
MF2, MF3, MF4, MF5, VS7, VS10+, VS12, Nero Vision Express. Ricoh and Sony 16x DVD recorder, Sony HC5 High def camera. Also Canopus ADVC110 for AV/DV input through firewire

Ruggy1,
When you previously posted the 4gig spliting I found it was doing the same on my OS.
Just curious, if capturing to a Fat32 partition that does have the 4 gig limitation will the program automatically split the files or generate an error when it hits the 4 gig file size.
I forgot to notice if the dv.avi files say Open DML. If they don't then that would be the reason.
I usually capture using a program that has complete control on the type of dv material. You can select the split size, dv type, progressive frames, upper/lower or raw dv.
Check out the latest updates to Nero 7. Nice video features for encoding.
