Bottom Line... DMF 4 - is it Dolby Digital Audio supported?

Post by phatalbert5 »

I currently have DMF 3 Standard Edition which came with my Hauppage WinTV PVR150 card. I am trying to edit a video off a DVD (DVD-R disc) I recorded using my Pioneer DVD Recorder and the only audio it outputs is in Dolby Digital Audio format. What's weird is that I was able to capture a video off a DVD-R I made off of my satellite receiver complete with sound 8) ! However, when I captured a VHS tape using my Pioneer DVD Recorder (remembering to finalize it too), it did not work which resulted in an error saying that the AC-3 was not supported (or something to that effect). :x :(

After reading several of the postings, I just want to know if I upgrade and get the DMF 4, will I run into the same problem of this whole Dolby-Digital-Audio-not-supported nonsense?

Please help?

Thanks!!!

I can't find anything nonsensical with the fact that a freebee software you got thrown in with some hardware you bought, not supporting AC-3. Heck, people had bought this software (MF3) and had to buy a plugin to get the AC-3 support.

For a comparison of MF3 and MF4 http://www.ulead.com/dmf/compare2.htm

You could buy womble MPEG2VCR $49, an excellant mpeg editor that can also convert the audio to Mpeg layer II and the movie factory 3 will burn it. If you like MF3 I would stick with it as MF 4 can be troublesome (just check this forum).

MF3 is nice and stable and MPEG2VCR is a really nice editor - there is a free trial version at http://womble.com/products/

When you have edited the mpeg before you save it you choose mpeg audio instaead of AC3.

To rip the dvd you recorded on the pinoeer I would use

PGCdemux (free)
and
ImagoMpeg (free)

Right! Dolby does not allow any free use of their technology. If you want AC3, they are going to get their royalities.

DON'T buy Movie Factory 4! Movie Factory 5 was just announced. :)

MPEG audio is NOT part of the NTSC standard. The Womble programs are good, and they've just anounced a new MPEG editor / DVD authoring program that has an AC3 encoder and an AC3 decoder ($140).

The gap between Video Studio 9 and Movie Factory 5 sounds very narrow.

got my sound back!

Well...I'm so glad that I got such a good response. Thanks to all of you who had replied. Lots of food for thought....

Anyways, an update. The same day I made the posting and got several expedient replies, I took the plunge and upgraded to DMF 4. Too late to wait for version 5, I am on a time constraint and had to upgrade.

So, my problem of having the inability to import Dolby Digital Audio sound from a DVD-R I made from my Pioneer DVD Recorder on DMF 3SE, was now non-existent! Talk about a huge burden lifted off my back!

Thank goodness for DMF4! Now my next step is to start working some of my creative magic.....and hopefully it's smooth sailing from there.
