Burn at 3X on 16X drive

Post by jdw »

I was running DVD MovieFactory 2 and found that I could only burn at 3X on my new 16X Lite-On SOHW-1633S (patched with the latest firmware BSOY) so I upgraded to version 4. I've patched to 4.04 with all of the latest patches I could find on the Ulead site. But, I still only get a max burn of 3X. :?

BTW - I'm using 8X DVD-R's (the max speed the Lite-On drive can burn DVD-R's should be 8X -- using DVD+R's the max speed should be 16X)

I've also run the Lite-on speed test application, Speedburn, to certify that my 8X Fujifilm DVD-Rs are writable at 8X. My copy of Nero burns the 8X DVD's with no problem.

So anybody have any idea as to why DVD Moviefactory will only burn at 3X?

You can limit the burn speed in preferences, maybe there is a limit imposed by default. Check it out. I would not burn my DVD's at 16x even if my media would allow for it.

Many people had problems playing their creations on set top DVD players when these were burned at high speed.

I have the same DVD writer but I NEVER burn a DVD faster than 4x otherwise I have found there are playback problems in some standalone DVD players.

Thanks for the replies. I'm just confused as to why when I set the burn speed at max (or directly to 8X) DVD MovieFactory falls back to 3X -- not even sure where that number comes from. It's not on the listed speeds that are available.

Oh well, since no one from Ulead has chimed in, I suppose it's not a problem that can be solved.

Some Burners do not burn the disc at the same speed throughout the entire burn. Perhaps yours is startign out at 3x, but will eventually kick in to a higher speed???

The best measuring stick is how long does it actually take to burn a full disc (or at least 4gb)? At 3x it would take about 20 minutes -- is that how long it is taking?

Strangely enough I came to burn some DVD's tonight and after the second coaster I made some investigation of my system.

Due to the location of my computer it picks up a lot of dust and so I have to take it apart every couple of months and give it a good clean. I also have 3 removable Hard Drive Carriers installed and so every so often one of the drives is pulled out and another inserted.

I found the cause of my problem was an IDE ribbon cable. Although it looked in 100% good condition I changed it and - no more coasters.

The write speed also increased. Before changing the cable I noticed the 4x write speed seemed to be gradually taking longer. After changing the cable it was back to the original approx 15mins for a full 4.3 DVD at 4x.

I had suspected that I might have some sort of hardware / driver / DMA / etc. issue, but Nero will burn a video DVD-R at the full 8X with no problem. I've played the resulting discs in multiple set-top players without issue. It's just DVD MovieFactory that refuses to burn at anything greater than 3X...

Strange -- but true
