Hello
a lab has transfered my old S-8 film to a cd as .mpg files.
Now I know, I should have choosen to save them on a DV cassette.
The mpg-files are with VS 8 recoginzed as
MPEG-2, upper field first, var.bitrate max 8000
and as
PAL-DVD, lower field first, 6000 kbps, compress 6 %, 25 f/s.
I import the mpg file direct to the timeline.
If I save the edited video as PAL DVD 2pass, and then recheck the saved file with VS8,
it says it is a MPEG-2, lower field, 6000 kbps video.
....Saved as PAL, lower field first,
VS8 says it is a PAL, lower f f, var.bit 8000 kbps
.
....Saved as PAL MPEG-2, framebased,
VS9 says it is a PAL DVD var. bitrate 6000
Why doesent VS8 use the same wording for the save option as for the recognized video I just saved ?
I have tried different projectsettings and get a short, fast, up and down flickering result.
Does anybody know if the above VS8-mentioned formats are
synonymous ?
Should I first save the imported mpg-file and then edit, or edit and then save as PAL DVD, lower field first, var. bitrate 8000 kbps ?
I feel stuck in this format-fog.

When you sort out the field order issue you may be interested in an articlle I wrote about presenting your converted super 8 flms on DVD

Regarding your field order problem. You should render it to the same field order recognised by VideoStudio. So if it is recognised as lower field first use lower field first. If recognised as upper field first then choose that.
The problem is that you did not capture the footage and so you don't know how they obtained it for you.

thank you Steve J !
....I had read your ref.posting and hoped you would answer, since you are familiar with S-8 to DVD buisness
where do you uncheck "fill colour" ?
I also found it strange, that the settting "steadyshot off", gives a steadier picture.
Recently I bought a Sony DRC HC 46 and I will try my own digitalizing and hoped that some of the jerkiness will "steady shot" take care of.
But first I will get the mpg-files on dvd.
Do you know how important the GOP is ? this is all over my head.
I have mailed the Lab and asked about the frame order
