Can someone please help a newbie out?

Post by DSMCR »

This is my first time trying to burn a DVD and I'm having problems. I am trying to burn items I recorded from my TV tuner to my hard drive. I am using Moviefactory 3. I select new video file and pick a file from my video folder, but an error comes up stating that Moviefactory has encountered a problem and needs to close. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong. I (think) that I'm following the steps properly, I'm trying to burn to a DVD-R disc, and I keep getting the same error message. Can someone please take the time to help me get my feet wet? Thank you in advance.

This problem, more often than not, has something to do with the way your system is set up. Since we no nothing about your system, how could we be of any help?

Just recently, after a rebuilt of my system, I had the same error coming up. It went away after I set up my virtual memory settings, emptied the temp files and set the temp files to a drive with ample free space.

I'm not sure what all you need to know about my system. Here is a list: ACPI Uniprocessor PC, Intel Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz, NVidia Geforce 6800 GT video card, Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105, Sony DVD-ROM DDV1612, 1 GB of RAM. If there is something else you need to know, please ask. I did empty my temp files, but I am not sure how to set virtual memory settings or set the temp files to a drive.

The most important details you did not give. OS, file system, HDD's, how many, size and free space on these? Connected to internet? Processes running in the background, also those that you may not know about. Check the Task manager for that. Did it ever work?

Oz, here is some more info. OS is XP Home Edition 2002. 68 GB hard drive with 46.4 GB of free space. I am on a cable modem. I'm not sure what you mean by file system. I checked the task manager for processes, there are around 15 items on there, but I don't know if I should end any of them. Thanks.

I would start by uninstalling MF, cleaning out the registry of all things MF, clearing the temp files for all users of this system (even if you are the only user, there will be folders for the default user as well as for your own user name). Reboot the system after you have done all that, disconnect from the internet, stop any virus scanner and fire wall and install MF 3 plus all patches.

The filesystem refers to the format of your HDD's, FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS. XP can use the NTFS file system but Win98 cannot.

MPEG files?

There is probably something “wrong” with your video file, or it is incompatible with Movie Factory. Are these MPEGs? (I’ve had lots of problems with MPEGs.) Will your capture hardware allow you to capture the TV video in AVI/DV format?
