VS 8 - Saving Trimmed Clip corruption

I have VS 8 and have been using it without issue for months. I have recently captured VBR 8000 MPEG-2 video. It captures fine. I then try to split it up into multiple clips and then save each one a "trimmed video". Save succeeds but when I try to view it, use slider bar, it is corrupted, and then hangs VS 8. I am VERY frustrated and ready to try another program. I have installed patch, and also tried to install timezone one, but it fails to recognize my installation for unknown reason. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have "cured" some corrupt video clips by re-rendering them to new files with Smart Render turned off. ( Share>Create Video File>Custom>Options)
