I have quite a few decent quality files in MPEG1 and WMV file format.
When I begin with good quality files, I find that editing the mpegs is both easier, and gets much better results. Hardly any reduction in quality.
But the same can't be said for the wmv files. Even where I begin with fairly high quality files, they are both harder to edit, and the quality is greatly reduced.
When editing MPEG1 files, I use the “same as project settings” in the "create video file" tab and this always works well. But with wmv files this causes a massive reduction of quality.
So really I guess I have three questions: first, why are wmv files so much harder to edit than mpeg 1 files.
Second, what settings should I be using in the “create video file” tab to get the best results for edited wmv files.
And third, if wmv can’t be edited well by VS9, then what editing program should I be using. Womble, or some other specialised mpeg and wmv editing program?
thanks,
Phil
problems editing wmv files

WMV files are highly compressed that why they are a lot harder to edit.
In any windows PC you can right click on the WMV file and this can give you the details of the file such at frame rate, resolution etc.. If you note it down and then apply the same settings it might resolve the problem.
Alternatively one can use windows movie maker to edit the wmv files.

Thanks for the reply. I actually did cotton on to editing with windows movie maker with OK results until I discovered that I could do what I wanted with SolveigMM video splitter with absolutely no loss of quality. First I join the files with asfBin and then edit them with Solveig for perfect results with absolutely no loss of quality. This I think is a better solution than windows movie maker.
