I have just ran the DVD MovieFactory 3 on my computer but cannot run the Crabster AV400 that came with it on any other program, why?

I don’t know, but I have a hypothesis…

Video capture drivers don’t seem to be as standardized as more common computer peripherals like printers.

I do know something about printers… Microsoft specifies exactly how a printer driver communicates with Windows, and how application programs communicate with Windows. The printer manufacturer can write a driver that acts as an interpreter between the specialized hardware and the standardized Windows operating system, and the printer will work with any Windows program. The application talks to Windows, Windows talks to the driver, the driver talks to the hardware.

It seems that with video capture, there is no standardized way for the program to communicate with the driver. If the capture device and program are not meant to work together, they won’t.

I don’t really expect the situation to improve either... Nobody cares about analog! The situation with Digital Video Cameras is much better. There does seem to be some standardization with the Firewire to DV camera interface.

I always recommend using the capture software that came with the analog capture device. Once you have a digital video file on your hard disk, you can use the software of your choice for editing & DVD authoring.

DVDDoug, I think you may have misread the OP. The way I read it seems to indicate that the device works with MF 3 but not with any other software.

Well, I guess, it's the same thing, 6 of those or half a dozen of the other.
