How to set project preferences to PAL video

Post by paulcoshott »

Hi All,

I have just upgraded to v9 and have installed the update patch. When I open the Project Preferences, the edit file format defaulted to MPEG Files, and this was set to DVD-PAL 16:9. I want to work with AVI, so I changed the edit file format to "Microsoft AVI files", and this changes to NTSC non-drop frame (30fps). If I click edit, I can't see anyway to change the TV Standard. It is set to NTSC and is grayed out.

When I installed, I chose Australia as my country rather than specifying PAL, and I still have v8 installed.

Any ideas how to set v9 to use PAL (version 8 works fine).
Cheers,
Paul

When I install _any_ Ulead product, I always first choose Australia as my country, and then go and tick the PAL box as well. The country part becomes greyed out at that point, but Australia remains highlighted. That makes doubly sure I have the correct TV system set.

That being said, you can also choose between PAL and NTSC on File > Preferences > Edit, at the top of that tab.

As for Project Properties, it is not set to mpeg as default. As you would have seen, while mpeg might appear when you open that screen, when you click on the drop down, the alternative -- and only alternative -- is Microsoft AVI files i.e. DV format. You can of course choose one or the other, though you have made the right choice in theory at least, opting for DV. When you first click on Edit on that screen to change the DV properties, yes, it will probably have NTSC greyed out. But click on the second tab (i.e. General) and then change the frame rate to 25 fps and the frame size to 720 x 576, and when you go back to the first tab, it should by now have changed to PAL and still be greyed out!

Good luck.

How to set make project preferences a default

Post by paulcoshott »

Hi Ken,

thanks for the help. That worked perfectly.

The File > Preferences > Edit were already set to PAL. I'll remeber your install procedure for next time.

After I made the changes in project properties (I also changed the Compression on the AVI tab to DV Video encoder - type 1 and on the General tab, I changed the Display aspect ratio to 16:9). I then saved this project as Temp1 and closed VS9. I opened VS9 again and in a new project I checked the project properties. The changes to the frame rate and the frame size stuck, so PAL was selected as the TV Standard, but the Compression and the Display aspect ratio reset themselves.
Is there any way to specify this as the default settings, so it uses them everytime ?

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul

Video Studio tends to change the project properties to match the first video clip inserted into the timeline.
This happens on every new project but not for every type of video file.
(it seems to depend on the type of compressor used)

To see this happen select File-Preferences-Show message when inserting first video clip.

Now start a NEW project (File-New Project)(Ctrl-N)
Insert a video file to the timeline.
Select ‘Details’ from the pop up window to view.
Select yes to match your properties.

Working with 16:9
Press F1 for help, index tab search for ‘startup screen’

The default project properties are 4:3.
The first start-up (splash) screen has a button to select 16:9.
This will change the default project to 16:9.
If you have disabled the first screen, which most have, go to file preferences—show start up screen.
Reboot Video Studio then select the 16:9 button.

You say you saved a project as Temp 1.
If this project contains the correct settings then use it as your template.
Open Temp 1 then Save As, giving it a new name will preserve Temp1 for future use.

Hope This Helps

Trevor
