I had a ton of problems with quicktracks and smart sound, but thanks to these forums, my problem was solved by going here:

Thank goodness I did not format my hard drive as tech support wanted me to do!!!
Smart sound now works but I cannot play mp3's in VS9. I insert them to the audio track and when I try to play them, there is no sound.
If I convert mp3's to wav files and insert the wav file into the audio track, it plays. I am tired of work arounds and would like to find a way to fix this problem. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
MP3 files will not play in VS9

It has been discussed on the board many times that certain MP3s (or probably the codecs used) can cause problems in VideoStudio. A common solution is to convert the offending MP3 to a WAV file.
You can try notifying Ulead support, but they probably already know of the problem. Fixing it is a whole other issue.
Not that it's any consolation, but converting an MP3 to a WAV is one of the easier workarounds
Show me a perfect video editor for $100 and I'm there
