Demo version + I think I have found a bug...

Post by William Hartnell »

Hi there!
:)

I have been tinkering with the demo version of Studio 9, and love it.

However, when outputing the project a a file under the SHARE tab/button, when you select DivX codec, and set the video bitrate, a window genrated from Zone Alarm pops up asking to allow Ulead access to the net.
I deny to allow access, and Studio 9 promptly closes - losing your project.

This is an abrupt and fatal application termination.

Anyone else had this problem?

I tried allowing access next time this message came up, but the same result, in that Studio 9 fatally crashed and terminated itself.

Why?

I refuse to deactivate Zone Alarm, cos Studio 9 should never crash, simply because it is denied Internet access at a given point...

I have taken to saving the project, before I go to the SHARE tab, so I can re-load the edited video if this question is asked - so not all is lost.

Also, when you select DivX as the output, and MP3 as the sound, the file encodes wonderfully, but when the clip is auto-played back, all I get is vertical colour lines. Fortunately, the actual file itself plays back fine in several media-players, but how come it does not in the Studio 9 player?

These are only small issues - not enough to stop me loving the program, but nevertheless...

Also, if I buy the boxed version, do I need to uninstall the demo version before I install the full version?

Hello WH and welcome!
I have no idea on the DivX call to access the internet however at the top of this forum you will see a sticky, "recommended procedures to avoid problems." Its a good read!
One point made there is to shut down ALL unnecessary programs while working with editing software due to it's resource intensive nature. It is advisable to not even be connected to the internet when you are editing as any porgram could suddenly spring to life and crash VS. Same goes for screen savers and power down settings etc.
On the purchase issue there have been many posts of people installing the full program on the freebie and having endless trouble. It seems to be far better to fully uninstall the freebie before installing the full program and YES, get the boxed version as it has an added feature of being able to do a repair if your installation gets damaged or corrupted.

The fact that you are playing with DivX is also a complication in itself. I assume that you already had the DivX codec on your computer as VS9 certainly doesn't install it itself as part of the VS9 installation. Moreover, as you are aware. DivX is mpeg-4, and VS9 is not supposed to have a native capacity to deal with mpeg-4, and should only do so with the mpeg-4 plug-in which is free to registered owners of the full program (i.e. you can't download it if you are only using the trial version). So this by itself could be major source of your problems. I too am not sure why the program wanted to access the internet, but it could have been to chase an updated DivX codec... That's one of the reasons I asked whether you already had a version installed on your computer...

Most likley you have the free version of Divx which has ad information built into it and every time you try to use it, it will try to access the internet to bring you to a page with their advertisement.

If you purchase Divx the ad info is not included.

You should read this tutorial: http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=9928

Hi!
:)

Thanks for the replies.

Just to reassure you, I capture raw video from the VCR using Studio 9, then edit that raw footage - usually around 13GB/Hr or so, then when I am happy with the results, the project is output to DivX.

I DO NOT EDIT ANY DIVX SOURCE VIDEO.

The colour-bars on playback - do you think this is cos S9 cannot actually talk to the DivX codec for playback, as it was not designed to do this?

As I said, minor problems, and it won't stop me buying the BOX package(thanks again for that advise!), just kinda curious.

The MPEG4 plugin - how does it differ from simply outputting the finished project to DivX using the installed DivX codec?

I really like S9, as it allows me to set DivX bitrates, and MP3 bitrates via external codecs, and the encoding is very fast, compared to other encoders...
