First-time user ... and I previewed a project in high-quality and the images looked like anything but. Looks just like instant playback.
Does anyone know why, and should I be concered? Digitizing to AVI files.

You say you are digitizing to avi files, and talk about the quality of the images. So are you creating a slideshow of still images, or capturing video from a camcorder?
