RW disks and Standalone DVD writers

Post by sjj1805 »

I thought this may be worth sharing.
My Brother in Law has a standalone DVD writer attached to his TV set for use as replacement for his old VHS recorder now considered by many as obsolete technology.

He has used the unit for over 12 months with rewriteable DVD disks without problem. Recently he found the unit would not erase his disks. He tried a DVD head cleaner etc but the problem persisted.

I suggested that he place the disks into his computer to erase them
The quick erase failed to have any effect but a full erase worked perfectly and he can now re-use the disks in the standalone player which now enables him to erase again.

Interesting, I've actually done it the other way around...

I had some DVD+RW discs that my computer could no longer erase (Quick or Full). I put them into my DVD Recorder and erased them using the DVD Recorder.

Glad to see we have options...

George

Hi,
Same here with my units.
I've had DVD+RW disks that Nero will not quick or full erase them.
I use the recorder to re-format them.
Those were the +RW's.

The opposite was true for -RW media.
I sometimes have to use the computer and perform a full erase.

There is a difference in the -RW disks. It depends what version
your using of the dvd-rw disk. Dvd-rw's do come in different versions format spec's.
