Losing the Sound after editing VOB'S

Post by ironclaw »

Hi, can anyone help please? I use Video Studio 7 SE DVD, and I am trying to edit VOB's recorded on my DVD recorder (to cut out adverts, trim start and ends, etc). Firstly, when I tried to import straight into VS 7 I got the message "Unable to open file".... File Format Mismatch (16803:1:3).
After searching for help on this Forum, I downloaded an Extension Changer, and changed the file from a VOB to an MPG.
VS 7 now loads the file, and edits and saves the video sections I want to keep with no problems, but while editing, I noticed the sound from the file had "disappeared"! Can anyone suggest where the problem is?

Check the properties of the MPEGs in VS. Look for the audio properties in particular, if it is Dolby (previously known as AC-3) you are out of luck. VS7 does not support Dolby. Dolby support was introduced through a separate plugin for VS8 and became fully supported in VS9.

I don't know if it will work with VS7, though in theory there is no reason why it should not. But there is a free AC-3 decoding filter available at http://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsear ... MIT=Search Certainly, people using VS8 seemed to use it a lot if they did not buy the relatively expensive Ulead AC-3 plug-in. The only limitation on this free one was that it would decode, but not re-encode, AC-3. However, the current version of this freeware filter would appear now to encode (though I have not tested this). Anyway, if you use it to decode, and then re-encode to one of the other two audio DVD formats (LPCM or mpeg-layer 2 audio), then you should be OK. And if not, then you could always upgrade to VS9!
