Hauppauge PVR-500, UL MF 3.5, Video Composite Input - Help?
Setup:
Windows MCE 2005 Update 2 (Can save and record TV fine in Win MC)
Hauppauge PVR-500 Dual Tuner with Composite Video connected to VCR
Ulead Movie Factory 3.5 OEM from PCAlchemy.com
Goal: I am trying to record video and sound from a VCR connected to the composite video input of the Hauppauge PVR-500.
Questions:
1. I cannot record video. I can see the video in MF3.5, but it gives me an error on recording about "MPEG capture does not accept HCW2 codec". I am guessing this is the Hauppauge hardware codec. Switching the capture plug in from "Ulead DSW MPEG Capture Plug In" to "Ulead DirectShow Capture Plug-In" Allows me to record an avi, but it does not play with Windows Media Player. Any suggestions?
2. I understand that there is a Hauppage patch for the MF4 full version. I am looking at the updates, but I find none for MF3.5. All I see are the updates for MF3.0. Can I use the MF3.0 updates on a MF3.5 installation?
3. I tried installing the MF3 Hauppage update over my MF3.5, but then when I try to get to the video capture page, it complains that a DLL cannot be found. (I cannot type it here, I uninstalled and reinstalled MF3.5). It was dead in the water.
4. Assuming I am supposed to install MF3.5, then the Hauppauge patch under MF3, am I supposed to then install the DVD MovieFactory 3.0 Update Pack Build 300P01 over that to get it back to working? (I did not think to try this before I uninstalled and reinstalled.)
5. Can I install the DVD MovieFactory 3.0 (Disc Creator) DL Support Pack over that to get Dual Layer support for my drive? Or can I not do that with my OEM version (is that what SE means?)? How do I tell if I can install this pack over my MF3.5 installation?
6. Are there no updates that address the MF3.5?
7. OK, Assuming I get all that to work, how do I record sound? I messed around with the Ulead Photo Factory and was able to record something, but I did not get the sound off the Hauppauge card. Apparently I am not setting my sound input properly.
8. I read the tutorial for Hauppauge cards here. It refers to MF4, which I do not have. It also mentions the Hauppauge WinTv2000 application. Apparently the CD with my card only had drivers. Is there somewhere on Hauppauge web site that I can get the WinTv2000 application?
9. I can record TV in Windows Media Center. Is there some way to record in Media Center off the Video composite input of the Hauppauge PVR-500?
10. When MF3.5 loads, it askes me about the demo 30 day MPEG2 encoder. Assuming I get the hauppauge card working, and I have the hardware encoder on the HP PVR500, I do not need this, right?
I appreciate any pointers on where to go from here.

The Movie Factory 3 updates upgrade 3.0 to 3.5, however the last patch will only work with the retail or the ESD version. If in fact you do have MF 3.5 you already have the latest version.

Firstly, please can you update your system specifications on your profile page. Whilst I research various items to provide you with some suggestions etc I have to keep flicking back to your original post to look for certain points. One is the Operating system. If I can just click on the "System Button" I do not have to keep searching through your post for the answer.
In addition to the pointers given by tyamada to the SHS site, it is also worth looking at the Official Hauppauge drivers site for your card
http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/support_mce.html
The reason for this is that the Hauppauge cards are periodically updated and the SHS drivers for my older PVR350 would not enable VTPlus32 (Teletext) to work, no doubt newer releases of the PVR350 would.
I don't think the Hauppauge PVR 500 is available in the UK, a search of the PC World website did not list that particular model and it does not figure on the UK Hauppauge website http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/
I had to go the the USA site to obtain details.
I found the following
The Administrator of the Hauppauge user forum has the following quote in a reply to another user
If you wish to try WinTV2000 then you can download a copy here:
http://www.hauppauge.com/pages/support/ ... 0-350.html
you will find it half way down the page, and as you discovered I created a tutorial which includes how to use the WinTV2000 to record.

By this it appears they refer to PVR150/250/350 and not to a non MCE version of the 500. The Hauppauge user forum only lists the 500 in MCE version plus there was reference to some Linux drivers. The WinTV-PVR for Media Center boards differ from the non-MCE WinTV-PVR versions in that they use the Microsoft Media Center USB Remote conbtrol and IR transmitter instead of the WinTV-PVR's built in IR receiver transmitter.

Thank you. Does that mean that I cannot install the Hauppauge support in it then so that I can use the Hauppauge Hardware MPEG2 codec? I do not see that option.tyamada wrote:The Movie Factory 3 updates upgrade 3.0 to 3.5, however the last patch will only work with the retail or the ESD version. Again, thank you. I will look at the first site. The second, I have the current drivers loaded: pvr150_20_35_23348tyamada wrote:You also might want to check out these sites:

I still do not know how to get the MF3.5 be able to capture video.

I did not find the LiteCD, but I did find the Win2000 off your link. I will give it a shot. So then I cannot use DVD MF 3.5 to capture video from the Hauppauge card? Would I be able to use it if I purchased the MF4? I cannot test that since the MF4 demo does not take the Hauppauge drivers patch for MF4, if I understand correctly.
Sterling
The only way you can tell if the Hauppauge plugin for Movie Factory 3 will work is to download it and try to install it.
If the install tells you it can't find MF3 then it won't install.
I don't use the Ulead plugin for my Hauppauge card due to the fact it only allows you to use one bitrate, which is 8000, that is way to high for what I do.
I use the Hauppauge WinTV2000 to capture my video because you can change all the video options in it.

A required component, hcwTVWnd.dll is missing.

As I said, I installed the MF 3 Hauppauge update over MF3.5 and it gave me errors on running MF3.5. I did not try MF3.5 -> MF3 HP update -> MF3 other update. I am not sure if that would work.tyamada wrote:The only way you can tell if the Hauppauge plugin for Movie Factory 3 will work is to download it and try to install it.

I think you may need the assistance of the users of the Hauppauge forum
You are obviously having a problem with the card and drivers which is possibly beyond the technical know how of this group specialising in Ulead products, but should be within the remit of that group of users.
May I please direct you to
http://www.shspvr.com/smf/
Should the users of that group manage to solve the Hauppauge PVR 500 / WinTV2000 issue please update this post so that any other Ulead Forum Members may benefit.

- I have the current drivers for the Hauppauge.
- I can capture from the card in other applications
- Ulead MF 3.5 shows me the current video on screen live
- BUT Ulead MF 3.5 cannot capture video due to the capture plug in "Ulead DSW MPEG Capture Plug In" and "Ulead DirectShow Capture Plug-In" not working.
- Obviously, Ulead MF 3.5 needs some plug in to capture video in MPEG2.
This is clearly a configuration issue with Ulead MF3.5. I would like to know how to get that application to understand a very standard capture card. I purchased this software specifically so that I could capture video.

This is the capture plug-in for a Hauppauge Card.
I advised that if you wish to try WinTV2000 to capture then you may need the assistance of the SHS Forum as that product is native to Hauppauge.
You mention above that you can capture with other applications, Then why struggle, capture with the other application then open that capture with your Ulead product(s), I always capture with WinTV2000 as that is the software specifically made to capture from that card. I can Capture via MF4 and VS9 but there are less options available relating to capture properties.
The PVR500 is far from a standard capture card. It is a dual tuner card specifically made to work with Windows Media Centre. It would be no use me purchasing one for my "Standard" Windows XP Professional, I very much doubt I would get it to work on my system.
At work with have a saying "KISS" which translates into keep it simple stupid (No I'm not calling you stupid) just pointing out a very good saying
do it the easy way.

Thank you. So that is the MF4 showing the Hauppauge plug in? Does that mean if I pay for the MF4 update and get the HP Patch on the Ulead site it should work? Are you getting sound captured as well?sjj1805 wrote: Sterling please view the following

Yes, I will pursue that to try to get the WinTV2000 to work. I would also like to find out if it is worth upgrading the MF4 for the capability.sjj1805 wrote:I advised that if you wish to try WinTV2000 to capture then you may need the assistance of the SHS Forum as that product is native to Hauppauge.
I was unclear. I can capture off the TV tuner in Windows Media Center, so I was trying to indicate that the card works. However, I have not found a way to save video in any manner off the composite video input on the card. (Side note: I wonder why Media Center cannot select the video input like other applications.)sjj1805 wrote:You mention above that you can capture with other applications, Then why struggle, capture with the other application then open that capture with your Ulead product
I am trying to understand if the MF3.5 has the capability to use this card. Apparently I was told incorrectly when I purchased it that it would work.

Please bear in mind that my Hauppauge card is a different model to yours and so what may work for me may not work for you.
In MF4 or VS9 yes I can capture from the Hauppauge card with sound.
My best advice at this point is to suggest you download the trial versionof MF4
