16x9 & 4x3 problem with VS9

I have been doing some quite heavy editing and to get round another bug I have been creating the AVI with a length set in it (otherwise it carries on after the end of the file and gets a corrupted AVI) - clean install too!!!!

The saved AVI views in WMP as 16x9 but it appears as a 4x3 in VS9

I want the project to be 16x9 but it appears as a pillar boxed bit in the middle with anamorphic distortion.

Any ideas?
