Creating "VOB" files

Post by gingeinoz »

I am trying to create DVD files (eg VTS_01_1.VOB etc) of high quality without burning to disc. Ulead cuts off at the allowable size for a disc even though I am not burning. Is it possible to create the VOB files on hard drive irrespective of size?

It issues a warning, but will allow you to create a VIDEO_TS folder that exceeds regular DVD capacity. I've done this numerous times so I could post-process the output using DVDShrink.

.VOB files

Are there any files in the VIDEO_TS folder? What's the total length of your video, and what project settings are you using (video bitrate and audio type/bitrate)? Do you expect the final DVD to be more or less than about 10gb?

I would have thought that if you have updated your VS 8 to be able to handle DVD 9 discs (i.e. dual layer ones), you would be able to use that setting as the target size, and then, as Torsten Hoff suggests, use a program like DVD Shrink to later reduce it for burning on a DVD 5 (single layer) disc, if your burner only handles single layer (or, like me, you are waiting for the price of DVD 9 discs to fall considerably!) :D

You don't even have to tell UVS that you want to create a DVD-9 disk, all you need to do is uncheck the checkbox for disk burning, and ignore any warning that says the output will not fit on a single disk.

Thanks for the replies, I will try and address all responses.
I am using UVS ver 7 SE DVD. (perhaps I need the pro version???). I intended to use DVD shrink as I find the size/time bar in UVS to be innaccurate.
No warning is issued, it just stops with 4 files of 1 gig and a smaller file of about 0.1 gig in the TS folder. I would expect the final DVD to be well less than 10 gig, ideally around 5 to 6 gig
I uncheck the "record to disc" box and specify output as DVD-video
Total length is about 1 hour 50 mins
Unfortunately I cannot capture in DVD quality. I capture in MPEG2 and go through a lengthy render and conversion process ending with the burn. It is only here that I know it fails
I am assuming that the problem is the theoretical disc size of 4.1 gig, maybe there are other issues??
Cheers

VIDEO_TS Folder

Post by GeorgeW »

So you are seeing files in the VIDEO_TS folder, but it's just stopping after about 4gb?

Not sure why that would happen, because the .VOB files get split up into 1gb chunks (by design, and as you are seeing). There is a 4gb filesize limitation for Fat32 drives -- I wonder if there's a temp file somehwere on a Fat32 drive???

Also, are you creating a DVD IMAGE file, or the DVD Folders to your hard drive? The IMAGE file will combine everything into one file, and maybe that';s the problem? Just try to create the DVD FOLDERS to your hard drive (and not the DVD IMAGE).

George

p.s. what are your system specs? Operating system, and how are your drives formatted (Fat32 or NTFS or other)?

Operating windows ME with drives formatted for Fat32.
Will atempt to create DVD folders and not the image (although I think I have tried this previously). Thanks again for your time
