Turning Off Swap File Brings Back Memory Leak

Post by jchunter_2 »

I had reported no problems with Video Studio with the system Swap file turned off. However, today I observed memory usage increase in VS8.01 during instant playback of mpeg2 files until VS crashed (no error message).

I restarted and repeated this several times, observing that sometimes memory usage acted like it had a "governor", (leveling off at a certain point and sometimes it just increased until it reached my physical memory limit (1GB). When I restored the SWAP file, memory useage behaved again during playback, consistently leveling off at about 600 MB.

IMHO, good memory management during playback should limit memory acquision regardless of whether page swapping is enabled. Page swapping during playback makes no sense because one is writing memory images of video out to a hard drive that could be retrieved just as fast from the original video file.

However, for the time being, I will be doing my edits with the Swap file set at 1GB.
