Media Studio Pro VE Edition

Post by sjj1805 »

A British Computer Magazine recently gave a "Full Version" copy of the above on its cover disk plus a link to a Special Ulead Webpage to obtain a serial number. Someone sent to me the following query:
Hi Steve,

Do you know if the MSP7 VE allows creating DVD compliant video? I tried to create a video file, and the only option I can find is for MPEG1 (VCD)..

The update/patches of course all say Full Version. So I'm thinking that for what ever reason Ulead didn't want people to create DVD files with this version..

Thanks
I shall answer this in the open forum as I think there may be others asking the same question. I installed a copy onto one of my spare Hard Drives and took a look. The program is a fully functional but restricted version. Think of it as a never ending trial program.

It appears to support all the AVI rendering options but as the person who posed the above question pointed out, it is restricted to MPEG1 (VCD)

It is still a good and worth having piece of software and your workround would be to use the program to create a video using several timelines then export as an AVI. You would then have to open the AVI in one of your regular Ulead Programs to encode to MPEG2.

Obviously the program is a taster to entice you to upgrade to the full version of Media Studio which has far more functions and power.

I also bought a copy of PC Authority, with the VE version of MSP7

It's disappointing to find that software is limited in some way, even if it is a mag cover product.

The magazine states in several places that MSP7 VE is the full program (who knows that VE means a cut down version anyway).

My issue is, thinking that this is full version, I updated MSP7 to SP3 from Uleads website.

Completely crashed..and had to do a uninstall / reinstall ...fortunately, I'm used to this, as I already have had several Ulead progs crash and burn.

Being a masochist, I tried 'creeping up from behind' with the updates. The CD/ DVD patch seemed to work ok. Then SP1 to version 7.01 also seemed to stick. Next on the list SP2. Can't download from website, as I get a '550 failed to change directory' error (whatever that is). Oh well, the cover cd version might already have the updates included anyway.

As for creating DVD quality files in MSP7 VE, I seemed to fare better. I used option 'create video files', in 'save as type', I selected MPEG. On the right hand side of the window, there is an 'options' button. Selected 'compression' tab, and in the 'media type' pull down menu, was able to select from several formats.

This may be because I'm already running UVS and UMF. Could be drawing on common files I guess.

Having said all of this MSP 7 VE is still a very worthwile prog, at a super price...just a pity that the limitations aren't made more apparent by the said magazine.

I'm sorry, but do you think it reasonable that free software given with a mag is likely to be worth hundreds of dollars? Nearly everything offered is either time limited or function limited, the idea being to make you want to get the full working version at a price. IOW, they are tasters. The big advantage is that they can get you onto the upgrade path and I would recommend you do just that to v. 8.0, which is streets ahead of v. 7, either full or VE.

Yes, I think that it is very reasonable that software offered at a fraction of the normal price (the cost of a magazine), should be a previous version, function or time limited. There are some fantastic bargins out there on covers.

As I say, the program (even though a previous one), is very worthwhile. I'll be making much use of it, and yes may even upgrade to version 8 if I get 'hooked'.

My point though, is that when installing these 'tasters', it would be good to know in what way they are 'limited'. Then I can make up my mind whether in install, or to purchase the current edition outright.

I don't want to labour this point...enough said!!

happy video editing ..BigRed

Hi all :)

I'm the one the Steve quoted in his post above. The MSP7 VE version is a great teaser too!! After having used VS for a few years, I was wanting the ability to have multiple tracks.

Now for the value of this freebie....
I received the disc from Steve, free of charge, he didn't even charge me the shipping costs. So after becoming increasingly hungry for a full version, and having resisted the temptation, since the release of MSP8, to d/l the TBYB, I gave in and done so. It was then that I noticed Ulead has discounted their offering of MSP8 to existing MSP users from $249 to $199. I also had received an email from Ulead, a 10% off coupon (in reference to trying their products). So here is the the real value of that freebie version. Without it I am only eligible for the VS or MF upgrade price of $299. Now I'm eligible for the $199 price, coupled with the 10 % off coupon, I was able to upgrade (although ESD only), for $179.

So the freebie disc saved me $91, and I think that's well worth it...
