Fitting a video file onto a 4.7Gb disk

Fitting a video file onto a 4.7Gb disk
I have an AVI file that is 2hrs45mins long. As the blank DVDs I have are 4.7gb(2hrs) long, I realise I'll have to use two discs. So I cut the file (now an mpeg) into two parts but the first part which is 1h30m is over 5gb and therefore won't fit onto one disk.
Rather than me finding another place to cut and go through rendering a new video file again, is there an easier way I can do this? maybe something in settings I've overlooked that i can tweak so it will fit okay?
Thanks

Check what audio type you used. If you used LPCM audio, then change that to Dolby Digital audio (224kbps) and you should be able to fit that on one SL Disc.
p.s. if your version of software does not have a DOlby Digital (AC3) Audio option, then you could try mpeg audio -- which is an optional audio format, but not all NTSC DVD Players will play it (if you are PAL, then it should work).

George

I'm having the same problem. I recently d/l the trial version of Video Studio 9. This is my first attempt at burning a DVD from one of our old analog VHS tapes. I've gotten thru the capture and editing phase and saved to file. The program says that my movie is 1 hour and 57 minutes long. Now I'm trying to burn to DVD. I added my chapters but when I try to burn to DVD, I get an error message saying that it will not fit on the disk. So I took the suggestions listed above. I changed the MPEG settings to SP (120 minute) quality and changed the audio to Dolby - 192. However, the size of the information has only reduced in size by a very small amount and still will not fit on the DVD. I added 22 chapters. Would this have added too much to the size of the project? Next time, I will not try to fit so much on one DVD. However, I have a lot of time invested in the current project. Can someone help me fit this so I can burn? Thanks!!

You can also use DVD Shrink. It automatically reduces your file to fit on a disc, it's free and works great.

When you use DVD shrink its a bit like compressing an already compressed file and so you lose a more quality. For this reason it is better to try and get the file the right size by using the bit rate.Black Lab wrote:You can also use DVD Shrink. Having said that, you may find that despite your best efforts you still end up with a DVD slightly too big. Then it is a good idea to finish off the job with DVDShrink as it is not degrading it as much as one that was initialy way off target.

Please read the following post and you will see I have made a couple of contributions to that thread in which I hope to have explained the file size issue.

I have just been playing around with all the different "Project Settings". The box that says "Do not convert compliant MPEG files." was checked. So I unchecked the box and now suddenly I can adjust how much of the DVD I fill up by changing the quality settings. With a video data rate setting of Variable Max 5000 kbps the DVD is just about filled up (4.35 GB).
By unchecking the box, what did I do???
Thanks

This is where you would turn smart rendering OFF at stage 3 where you want to reduce the file size to fit the final DVD.
Although you can do it at step 3 or step 6, it's best done at step 3.
EDIT
oops sorry getting two very similar postings crossed.
please read this thread

There is another thread starting to grow dealing with render time issues here:
