Hi there,
new to video studio and generally impressed over pinnacle which i have used for a few years.
problem - record video in 4v3 (sony DCR-PC5E), firewired to my pc, i tick the 16 x 9 button and my project is captured with black bars top and bottom, left and right.
i have read other threads to try and find my answer but alas - any help would be hugely appreciated.
many thanks

16:9 is very difficult to understand, as I am slowly learning. When you record anamorphic 16:9, you get a wider screen, but squeezed onto a 4:3 frame, as there isnt a consumer 16:9 tape format, it all has to be squeezed to fit the extra image on the tape. When you tick the 16:9, VS squeezes it horizontally to make the picture appear as normal on the 4:3 display monitor, but in your case, squeezing the image that was originally 4:3 results in much wider, and distorted images. So VS must compensate by then squeezing it vertically, and this creates your black frame look, with letterboxes, and pillarboxes (pillarboxes are the vertical bars) Lost yet, I almost confused myself there. There are alot of websites that you can google for to help you understand widescreen. Why are you ticking the 16:9 box anyway, since your source wasn't 16:9? It isn't going to work, unless you follow the Procedures in the Tutorial forum for converting the 4:3 image to 16:9 without distortion.

Hi harryt
I have been working in widescreen for a while and have no problems.
True the preview screen shows in widescreen with black bars top and bottom, but the frame is in proportion.
If you change the preview screens background colour from black ( file –Preferences) you will be able to identify the actual video frame with regards to the unused portions of the preview screen.
If you recorded the vhs tape in 4:3 format, Why did you capture to 16 :9.
Right click a clip in either the library or timeline and select properties.
What are they? Do the attributes show 16:9 or 4:3
Post them here.
How did you capture your Vhs tape,
What capture settings did you use?
