Archiving AVI's? whatabout Ghosting Image?

Post by antzpompeii »

Just a thought....

Considering i have a 40GB HDD with about 33GB to play with.... whatabout if i captured all my AVI files and then burn a ghost image on dvd?

I have an extended Logical VIDEO Partition which i only use for video, so i can delete/create and defrag this partition at any time without loosing my OS which is on my Primary Partition.

Is ghosting this partition a possibility - so then in the future if i want to bring back those files and do more editing i can.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Thre are some previous posts on this subject worth doing a search for a few ideas. What I do if I want to keep archives of 'originals' is before I start any editing I convert my AVI files to the smaller MPEG files then burn the 'raw' MPEG files to DVD disc(s) - got me out of trouble a couple of times when later during/after editing the AVI files I may have noticed a small flaw that needed to be corrected. I could grab the errant part from the archived MPEG.

AVI files as you are aware are huge and so present a problem when considering archiving. Perhaps when the Blue Ray discs come out this will not be so much of a problem.

Antz -- just to make things clear (once again!!! ), there is no way of saving DV/AVIs as DV/AVIs yet somehow have them saved in a much smaller form so that they fit on a DVD. As I have said to you at least twice before, there is absolutely no problem in archiving DV/AVIs to DVD (as data files), but you would need to break them up into 4.3 GB sections so that each section will fit on a DVD. Or as Steve has just suggested, convert them to mpeg-2. But then again, that is precisely where you started off your other post on this subject! And I answered it then too!!!

A ghost image (such as is produced by a program like Norton's Ghost) is really just another form of back-up, and your files would be ghosted in their original format and size... the only useful difference to my suggestion of direct archiving is that Ghost itself will break a larger DV/AVI into segments that will fit on a DVD, and should later provide a seamless re-joining of those segments.

If upgrading the hard drive in your PC is not an option then how about an external hard drive either firewire or USB connected - even 250Gb ones are quite reasonably priced now - and you can connect and disconnect them at will so you could end up with any number of external hard drives all full of your videos which you only connect up when you want to save or retrieve those particular videos.
